my first Elextrolux XXX

I just picked this up for $10 - no cord or attachments - I plugged it in with a cord I have and was delighted with how quiet it was (though it did shoot out a cloud of dust). The suction seemed alright, but not as strong as my LX. Other than washing the bag and cleaning and polishing, what could I do to bring it up to optimal running shape? Any suggestions for a polish to use? Turtle way?

Yes, Turtle Wax Chrome Polish works great! I used it on both of my XXX's and they are really shiny!

I used a magic eraser on the tank then turtle wax and Mother's on the metal. I'm really pleased with it too, but want to spend more time getting into all the crevices.

Mothers

Mothers is a metal polish that should be available at most hardware and automotive shops - I also used a buffing wheel on a bench grinder to save time, but you can polish just as nicely by hand if you dedicate some time and effort.

I just recently...

got my first Model XXX as well which I picked up fairly inexpensively. Just like yours, sfcoronet, I had to give it a "spa" treatment. Mine blew out a cloud of dust when I first fired it up as well, because the exhaust filter and the dust bag were caked with fine dirt. The cord also had electrical tape on it, and I'm not a fan of "taped" cords.

I bought a new cord from eBay, put in a new filter and dust bag, and replaced the motor (as the bearings/brushes were shot in the original motor). Total cost to restore this baby: $50. Using it to clean my apartment...PRICELESS.

The suction my XXX has is "decent"...good enough to clean bare floors and low-pile carpet and furniture...yet even with a replacement 535 watt motor, it doesn't pull quite as strong as the later models I have, such as the Models L and G. Anyone else notice this between the XXX and later models?

Also, just a side note (and someone please correct me if I'm wrong): cloth dust bags aren't supposed to be laundered because they're treated with a sizing that helps them to trap dirt better. It might be advisable to purchase a replacement bag on eBay...they run between $12 - $20.

getting newer models or vacs in better condition than the ones I already have. No wonder I have so many vacs. I really need to start weeding out my collection and start sending the vacs onto better homes.I have this fear the TV show Hoarders Is going to come into my house and find me laying under a pile of vacuum cleaners and all their parts.... That's a scary thought... Dan
