Some may have noticed my recent postings and membership here, in an attempt to educate myself and use said education to restock my vacuum needs for the recent home acquisition. I settled on a couple of Guardian uprights, floor pro, and the Guardian canister.

Being a bit unsure about the canister, I purchased a used Guardian from an Ebay seller, and as far as I have been able to discern, the last iteration before the release of the Guardian Ultra. It seemed to have the feature layout I like - especially the on board tool storage and adjustable speed/suction on the handle controls - so I bought a light use version for a very good price, and as it turns out I like it a great deal.

Thinking to myself that I wish I could still buy a brand new one, I set about looking for one, and lo and behold I found about as close as I could get. It was demoed by the Aerus rep and purchased, then stored in original packing where it sat for four years. Thinking it was as close as I was probably ever going to get to a new one, I made a deal with the owner and purchased it.

It was everything as advertised - mint condition with only evidence of a demo or two. But an interesting feature came unexpected: The machine had a green brushroll installed on the power nozzle, and has a black (instead of red) circuit breaker button. I've read some here about that green brushroll - and know well that this had to be a specially prepared option and would not have come that way from the factory. It's certainly a bit of a headscratcher, but I must say that I am very pleased with my pair of Guardian canisters, as well as all of my newly acquired Lux gear.

Great forum, BTW - this has been a great help in gaining insight as to what the various machines carry for pros and cons. A good education, to be sure.

All the models were built with the green bristled brush roller for about two years, until the problems with the motor started. The green bristles put too much strain on the motor, and the circuit breaker would shut off the nozzle prematurely. Aerus went back to the 'old' brush roller design, rather than redesign the power nozzle motor and circuit breaker. It's also louder than the standard brush roller. You might want to buy a standard brush roller and use it rather than the green bristled one. A new brush roller is very inexpensive.

I thought that might be the best move......

.......to simply equip this with the standard double helix. I took the machine for a 15-20 minute test drive today on the shorter pile plush carpet, and the green roll is noticeably "grabbier" and does lift the nap rather quickly. However, having done a thorough archive search I understand that it would be a risk, especially if used on higher pile carpets, as well as potentially causing added wear to them. What I didn't know is that these were a standard on machines sold - I thought it was an optional service item that could be purchased from Lux for special situations.

I'll likely keep the new/demo machine in packing for later use anyway, having another that will see more regular use in "the current". I have no issue with the double helix brushroll anyway - in fact it's one of the reasons I like these machines so much - they seem to groom carpet very well while still being gentle to them. They seem to strike a good balance in that regard.
