My 375

Hi all Uk vac enthusiasts. I hope all had a great new year.

I am wanting my 375 to look more like it should this year. I will be going for a black & white look this year.

I would like to know if any one here has a white ribbed cord lying around they would possibly like to sell. Probably a long shot but thought I would try here.

I was supposed to get a load of spares from someone in new Milton in exchange for a load of vintage small alliances I had but he showed up empty saying he was cleaning everything before giving to me and his mum has since "misplaced everything' now he can't find anything. I doubt I will ever get anything off this clown so had to buy one of eBay for the bag and wheels. Hopefully motor works so at least can have a spare.

I plan to respray in a nice white and would like a white ribbed cord to replace the grey ribbed one currently there now. If you need it for one of your projects I can send it to you after white one arrives.

I think it will look great once finished. Not sure if I should leave black on belt cover or go white.

If any one in the U.K can help please let me know.

The handle was resprayed and a n.o.s rubber handle grip fitted. The one on the ebay cleaner was shot completely as it must have been in shed or very hot environment as rubber handle and cord were extremely perished. I also had to assume the inside wiring would also be in a similar condition so will be tossing it unless someone here wants it. Probably a respray and re wiring.

I plan to recondition motor for a spare as I am sure it is fine but will check out anyway. Once happy it can go in my 375 spares box along with the belts and brushes so can keep running for ages.

When I washed the bag out in the tub I swear the water was as black as the bag. Good googly eyes it was filthy!!! That is the one major downside to buying someone else's used vacs. You have to buy dirt that Grandma Wilma probably picked up decades before as these were certainly used for the purpose intended.

Thankfully it is all clean now and a paper bag inside so i never have to let my bathtub re live that moment again. I hope!!

The worst bags are the ones from pet owners. YUCK!!!!

If you have any comments or suggestions just let me know. It would be nice to meet other collectors here like they do in the states every year but people here just don't seem to get together. I had to sell all my vacs when I moved into my park home because of space. I am sure you have seen this 375 on here from my other posts but I was wanting it to look more like it should.

Honestly I give up!!

I cannot help that I had to come back here and watch my family back in the states die off one by one. If I had been able to work with Jim Martin in his shop then maybe i could have made a few friends and went to conventions.

I have 135 upgraded days left but I would just rather say goodbye now and forget it. Maybe this site is just for stateside collectors.

I wont be returning so the moderator can just delete me like everyone else has.

I mean... I have a white ribbed cord off an Oreck, but I assume you will need 3 prong. I can probably source a white, ribbed 3 wire cord for you.

Thanks hoover 300 but voltage is 240 v here.

huskyvacs have put a message on the forum. It is a shame collectors here are not active. I sure wish I could have stayed over there. My collection would have been vast by now.

My account is now scheduled for deletion. It was a shame I had no one here to help share my enthusiasm of collecting. I used to call rugsucker often but I never got the chance to see him in person. I used to be hoover119dude but stopped as I could never remember password.

Not much different here for me as collectors never meet up or organise events like you do over there.

I have always struggled to make friends at every point in my life.

Maybe I will rejoin again someday.

Just curious about the cord comment.

Why couldn't you use the cord Hoover300 offered to source?  That may be a dumb question, so forgive me.  I'm just trying learn as I go.

The voltage here in UK is 240v compared to 110V stateside. If you run 240v through a 110v cord the wires would probably melt and catch fire. I have however in the past ran a vacuum from California Hoover 700 here using a 240v cord.


You can run 110 through a 240 safely but not the other way around.

Hope this clears things up.

The only difference is the motor and plug.

They use copper wire in the UK just like the US.  The difference is the way the electric motors are wired.  If I use my US vacuum in the UK I have to use a step down transformer, or my motor will burn up.   But the cord itself would be fine.  


 


17 AWG power cords can handle the amps at under 50' in length.   You do have to go larger if you're powering a higher amp electric motor, or want to cord that is over 50' long.   


 


This is why I asked why he was concerned about the cord.  I understand the motor, but not the concern about the cord.

To give you an idea of our electric voltage over here,

Before moving to Fla in 76 I was living here. When I was 3 I stuck a knife into an electric socket. There was a bang and the entire knife melted. If the handle had not been made of plastic I would have died from that.

My uncle got a shock from a faulty socket and he got thrown to the other side of the room.

I have an Osteriser blender 110v here but do have a voltage reducer if I ever need to run it.

I am sure the wires are the same but not sure. That 375 will be sold soon anyway.

Voltage and amperage are two measures of electrical current or flow of electrons.


 


Amperage is a measure of the volume of electrons. Voltage is a measure of the pressure that allows electrons to flow.   1,000 volts is no more deadly than a current at 100 volts, but a change in amperage can mean the difference between life and death when a person receives an electrical shock. 


 


You're correct about the safety factor though.  The US uses 240v split into 2 circuits. US homes get 3 wires: -120V, 0V and +120V.


 


Circuits between 0 and one of the others have a 120V potential. They are used for most appliances and the lower voltage means a lower current, which makes it a bit safer in case of electrocution.


 


Circuits between -120 and +120 have a 240v potential and can be used for appliances requiring more power.


 


So in the US you can use an electric motor wired for 240v and you can use an electric motor wired for 110v.   But you can't use a electric motor wired for 110v in the UK.  (I hope I didn't jack this up too much)


 


I say all that, because we are just talking about the electrical cord, not the motor.  A US electrical cord will work in the UK when used for the same load.  (Edit to add, I know the plug is different, so an adapter or wiring a UK compliant plug would be required)

At my request. UK collectors are not really active on this site. I have been back for 24 years and have met 1 in 2015 and not seen them since. I gave him a nice 700 and a hoover spirit. hoping I could make a friend who shares the same interests as me.

Most people here meet you take what they want and you never hear from them again.

I tried to organise a mini meet here like you all do there.

Most seemed to complain it was too far to drive. 50 or 60 miles is not much considering you all there drive or fly hundreds of miles to go to conventions.

vacbear58, watsonw, vintagehoover and beko87 are a few of the collectors i know of here.

I had to sell or give away my collection over the years as I now live in a smal park home (trailer to you) and no longer have any room for them.

The 375 is going to be sold for parts as I am keeping my 1958 hoover junior in White & Rose. My home is only 10ft x 24 ft so not big as I am sure you can tell.

I am sure I will come back here in time to see threads.

If I could have stayed and worked with Jimmy (rugsucker) when he had his shop, life might have been a lot better as we could have attended a convention and I could have met others who share my interest.

Now I just concentrate on 50s items. Appliances, soap boxes and the like.

Maybe I should stay as I still have 120 upgraded days left that I paid for. Hopefully webmaster will hold off till then. Who knows.

The coolest thing about the internet are forums like this one.  It doesn't really matter where in the world you are, you can find people to discuss any subject, hobby, or interest.  Physical distance doesn't matter.
