Musty Electrolux Ultralux Classic

Somehow in the course of 2 months I ran across 2 Ultralux Classics.. I parted with the first one, but today I found another one somehow in the same location. Quite random. Any tips/suggestions on how to get ride of the musty exhaust. The motor and suction are fine and otherwise the thing is in great condition, clean brushroll and nozzle, minor scuffs on the body, braided hose intact, working cord rewind.. It just has that smell when running.

I would suggest washing all the filters until they run clear followed by a soak in a cider vinegar, water and dishwashing liquid soak. The first clean is to make certain that the scenting liquid stays clean.

I mean't without tearing the thing apart. old Electrolux 1521.. Pre-Renaissance. I took the bag out and that's definitely part of the problem. Still smells in the bag compartment.. I'll get back.

Try the exhaust filter, I know it will be easy to remove without even a screwdriver, I just don't know how to. I would know it's just that we didn't get anything with that shape. Try dipping a cloth in that mix and wiping everything with it as well as you can.

I think I'm going to try a vinegar baking soda past rub on the bag compartment plastic.. dry that out.. run it for a bit... and proceed from there. see where it's at. I had a Miele like this a earlier in the year. But the motor had apparently been abused by damp sheet rock.. Wanted to smack whoever took a 5 year old 600 vac and decided that would be a wise idea.

You really just need to use something like cider vinegar or baking soda to absorb the smell and something like dishwashing liquid to kill any remaining germs and scent the inside.

No. Not apple cider vinegar. You need to use white vinegar. Believe me. I have de-stunk ( is that a word, lol ) a lot of vacuums. White vinegar, alcohol, some Zep's orange degreaser from Home Depot, a wee bit of dish detergent and the hottest water you can stand.

Sometimes just leaving it outdoors on a patio for a couple of weeks with the bag door open and the exhaust filter cover and filter removed will air it out.

And if none of that works I would be more than happy to take it off your hands. I have been looking for a 1521 for a project, to put a modern Electromotor 6500-298 motor in one and see what kind of havoc I can create.

I prefer apple cider vinegar as it leaves a nice (to me) scent in the machine.
