I expanded my vacuum hunt to Sedalia and made a pit stop at House of Vacuums. The owner was real gracious and let me in his storage unit across from his shop. While in there I gasped when I saw a Hoover Innovation U5045. And I saw this Convertible-esque Hoover Encore model U4595 and took it. Since he hadn't gotten to inspecting and tweaking any possible bugs, he sold me both for $30.

They both work great in cleaning, except on the Innovation the handle release is broke and won't stay standing up. Anybody know how to fix this?

Alex...

Congratulations on your Hoover finds. Sounds like a very nice shop owner as you got them both very reasonably. I have the same Innovation. I am not sure how to repair the foot release. I am sure if you tinker with it long enough that you will be able to solve the problem. The biggest problem with that model is the handle itself. The top part (grip) seems to snap off there at the "bend" in the handle. Looks like you have a good one. Also that is the top model in the Innovation line and was pretty expensive when new. However, if you have used it you know how well it cleans!

Congrats too on the Convertible. They slapped "Encore" on lots of things over the years particularly in the 1990s. I wonder just how Limited the production really was on this machine. It does clean carpet though! This one looks to be in very good condition too.

Wow two Hoovers in one day! That is what I call real luck!!

Nice finds!

The Encore was made approx 1988-91 or so, as a cheaper alternative to the U4497 Convertible 700(which was also called Legacy) The cord should be platinum grey to match the handle.
You should also find the date of manufacture in the first four digits of the serial number.
The Encore is kind of a rare bird, I've not seen nearly as many of those as I have of the U4497..
Congrats!

Jeff

Jeff that was gonna be another question about the first 4 numbers in the serial number if they correspond to a date? The Innovation was made August 1988 (if the first 4 are 0888) and the Encore November 1990 (1190)

Tom, I took the hood off and there's a little plastic end with notches that the handle release nests on. It looked like one of the notches was broken off and I'm guessing that's the one that puts the vacuum in the upright position

Alex

You could be right- I must confess its a while since ive had one of these apart!, your best bet it to take the hood off and investigate ;). There are 2 screws, one under the belts and one in the dust channel opposite.
