I just entered the price, $249.95, in the Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI Inflation Calculator to see what the price would be in 2025 dollars. It is $1,380.27. Top of the line Miele or Sebo prices. Hard to imagine but back then a vacuum was a major expense.
When people like to imagine everything made in the US again I like to compare 1970s and 1980s Sears and Montgomery Wards catalog prices to prices for the modern equivalent using the CPI Inflation Calculator. US made products were always expensive relative to our incomes. We just didn't have as much stuff back then as we do today. No computers, one TV or at most mom and dad had a second TV in their bedroom. One or maybe two cars but no jet skis or snowmobiles, no cell phones, no home theaters, fewer toys in the kitchen and garage. But the stuff we had cost a lot and lasted a long time.
