Monstrous Hild 'Shop Vac'

I found this beast on CL, the bearings were noisy so I took it apart and greased them. My goodness is thing powerful! It has an aluminum fan in it the size of a dinner plate! I'm clueless as to the year it was made and the model number is obscured.

The model number looks like 715-11/2 in the photo. Looking at the motor rating of 1.5 hp, I'm guessing it's a model 715 with a 1.5hp motor. But you're right, it's a beast. Interesting that the manufacturer on the label is Hild Flour Co.

Why would this need a bag? Does the dirt not go into the tank?

The tank collects heavy objects like stones or coins. There is also a big separator screen in the tank that blocks large objects from entering the fan if they don't fall to the bottom of the tank. The bag is mostly for dust.

bag is really big ! good find. i have a cadillac vacuum with a fairly good size bag on it.

Looks like it was intended to suck sawdust from shop machines....maybe part of a shop system...?

Hild shop vacuum-YES,external filter machines RULE over internal filter ones-the external filter vacuums don't clog from clogged filters as the internal ones do.The external filter shp vacuums can eat more fine dust and sawdust before the large external bag has to be dumpted.The Hild vacuum is much like my Tornado vacuum.Does the motor detach from the Hild tank lid so you can use it as a blower?That was another advantage for ext filter machines-the motor could be detached and used as a blower.

Thanks for sharing! I had no idea such a vacuum existed, but with that large bag, it's something I'd love to have. I wonder how it would stack up against an NSS Pig?

It would be VERY similar to the Pig-but with even MORE capacity-you will have BOTH a drum and bag to fill!Careful-if the hard material gets too high in the drum the fan in vac lid mounted vac motor will try to eat the hard stuff-possibly breaking the fan or even putting a hole in the bag!I have both types of machines-the External filter-Hild,Tornado,old NSS Bronco will keep going long after internal filter(most made now) have clogged.Would like to see MORE external filter vacuums made-the filter bags are getting better we could get near HEPA filtering with them-esp if a cloth type HEPA disposable bag could be used in the cloth outer one-like the Pig.

Thanks for the info! I could see how overfilling the drum could spell trouble for the fan.

I searched around on Google looking for a picture of the NSS Bronco you speak of, but couldn't find any pictures. Could anyone here share what that thing looks like?

When you mention external filter vacuums, the first thing I think about is this big Cincinatti dust collector my high school wood shop instructor had attached to the large planar. I think ours was the 200S. It sure was one big vacuum!

The older NSS Broncos were a truly beautiful vacuum.15 gal stainless steel tank-polished at the factory so it gleamed like a Kirby.The motor housing was polished as well.Then had the HUGE blue bag with the famous "Horse" NSS logo-my favorite.Saw one of those machines in a Daycon janitorial products showroom in WasH DC during the 70's.That inspired me to buy my first NSS M1 that I still have and use today-like almost 40 yrs old!Somewhere in my collection of books-many boxes of them-have an old Daycon catalog that shows the vacuum.So would love to have one.The new Broncos have the internal filters.And on the old NSS ext filter vacuum the motor-blower could be detached to use as a blower or had a hose and trap attachment so it could be used as a "hip"vacuum-a shoulder sling was available to connect to the motor along with a smaller bag.
