I purchased a used Mohawk Soniclean, and after cleaning it throughly and buying bags for it I noticed something I did not expect. I am not sure if this is normal, but it is incredibly loud! I have another vacuum, a Shark Apex Uplight, and this vacuum is nearly double that in noise on the high setting. Is this normal for this kind of vacuum? The sound is not particularly strange, it is just the regular vacuum motor noise 2x. Overall, I was not expecting this from a vacuum of this sort, and I am unsure if I want to keep it. I live in an apartment, so the noise might become an issue.

Thank you all, Daniel.

Direct air vacuums that pull the dirt through the fan and blow it into a bag, like Soniclean, Oreck, Kirby, Sanitaire Traditions etc are generally louder than clean air vacuums.

Daniel, Direct Air Uprights are naturally a bit noisier than clean air uprights due to the fact everything goes through the fan. However, I would strongly suggest checking the fan and making sure it is intact. If the blades are broken or chipped, that could account for the increased noise.

Thanks, I will check the fan and see if it is intact. The previous owner said it was only 6 months old, although I suspect this is untrue given the low price I bought it for.

I used to joke that my old Hoover Caddy Vac, which is a direct air machine based on the old Hoover Elite series, converted electricity into noise. Nothing wrong with it. Fan and housing are as new. Just how they were. Same with my Hoover Breathe Easy, a little more upscale version but the same basic motor and fan configuration. Just the nature of direct air vacuums. To be fair they are good carpet cleaners and if you use the synthetic HEPA Type Y bag and a "Hoover Final Filter" in the bag door they filter pretty well too. But they're both pretty loud.
