Modifying Vacuums To Use Different Bags

Hey Vacuumlanders

A couple of days ago, I got the idea to modify one of my Royal Metal uprights to use Kirby Generation bags. Why? Well, I am an allergy sufferer, & I use the HEPA Cloth bags....Kirby HEPA cloth bags are cheaper than Royal's. Plus, Kirby bags are easier to find online & in vacuum shops without requiring special order, & there are generic Kirby HEPA Cloth bags....but not for Royal. I modified the Royal by increasing the bag tube's diameter so that Kirby bags will fit snug. I have also had to do this with a Sharp Twin Energy upright I own....to use HEPA Cloth bags, it's easier to find Kenmore 5055 HEPA Cloth bags than Sharp PU-2 HEPA Cloth bags, & they work just as well without modififying the vacuum.

So, the thought occured to me....has anyone here ever modified their vacuums to use another vacuum's bags? Or just use another vacuum's bags in their vacuum? I know this can become a necessity in cases where the company that produced the vacuum has been long out of business....Lewyt & Sunbeam being perfect examples.

And Royal metal upright bags are paper only---except from very special order thru TTI-you CAN get B filtrete style bags-hard to get-sold individually,and at high prices.So modifying the Royal to use Kirby bags makes sense.What did you use to modify the Royal feed tube-and is the mod reversable?That way you could use the orig Royal bags if you had to.

I used to have a Sharp Twin Energy and I ordered cloth HEPA bags on Amazon once. I ended up receiving low quality bags that weren't cloth.

Also, I've never modified a vacuum to take different bags, but I have modified bags to fit vacuums they weren't designed for.

I carry a Hepa Bag designed for the Perfect commercial upright that is exactly the same as the Royal and Hoover style B. Email me if you want to order some.

The problem is shipping from America to Canada is insanely expensive, & in addition us Canadians get penalized by Canada Customs the moment a purchase crosses the border. I thank you for your information, though, & will keep in mind that the Perfect Commercial upright bags would fit, should I ever decide to buy them from a vac shop in Ontario. The main reason why I decided to modify 1 of my Royal's to use Kirby bags, though, is I wanted to be able to walk into a local shop & pick up bags without having to special order them, or have them shipped & pay for shipping charges. </span>

<span style="font-family: times new roman,times; font-size: medium;">Rex....what I did to modify my Royal was I wrapped the bag mount tube with duct tape to increase the tube's diameter & tested the Kirby bag's fit; then cut away the excess tape. So, this would be easy to undo should I ever feel like using Royal bags again.      </span>

Yeah I never modify the vacuum, just the bag I intend to put on it. I found for small canisters that aren't worth $4 for a pack of tiny bags, I buy those cheap shop vac filter bags and glue them to the old bag collar, and make sure the vac has a better than original pre motor filter. Works nicely. Did it with a Regina housekeeper too. I've also found a lot of bags just fit other machines with a good push. Like I came across some decent hepa bags, the kind that have that nice rubber to help seal to the vac, and they fit great on practically every vac that you put a bag on from the front (panasonics, windtunnels, (old) bissell plus.)
