Miele U1 bag fitment

I recently purchased a used Miele U1 upright that is seemingly in mint condition but produced December 2014. The only issue, and may not be an issue, is the bag fitment hangs open and will not snap up in place by my hand, but the cover design automatically will push this fitment up to have the bag sealed when the compartment is closed. I'm not sure if this is how it is supposed to work or if the spring on the fitment is missing/broken? Any experience with this? I think it is a non-issue, but wanted to check. No dust appears inside the compartment.


I can get a replacement for ~$15 if someone can explain why my current situation may be problematic.

Follow up to my last post. I just did a closer inspection of the fitment and it looks like there is a fully functioning spring to push the fitment down... so I was wrong thinking the spring pushes the fitment up. So relative to my (imaginary?) issue that the bag fitment with bag, when pushed up by hand, will not stay sealed before closing the compartment, is it an issue? If so, what is the cause and how can it be fixed? Or is it a non-issue and inherent to the vacuum design since the compartment door is designed to seal the bag in place when closed.

Mine kinda flops down when the cover is open but closes when the cover is closed.... dont think its an issue.

I don't have a Miele upright, but I'm sure I came across something similar on the internet, where someone was having problems with their older Miele S7, and the bag collar wouldn't lock against the inlet tube. A new bag holder apparently fixed that problem. I think it was a broken spring in that particular case.

As far as I can remember, the bag was slotted into the holder, then the holder was pivoted upwards to mate with the inlet tube - and it stayed there of its own accord. Then the user closed the bag door.

The more I look at the dangling fitment, see how the spring is designed to push the fitment down, and see how there are angled guides on the door to push the fitment up when closed, I'm thinking the flopping fitment is a feature rather than a bug. As mentioned, I don't see a spec of dust inside the 3+ year old vacuum, so it must be doing its J-O-B.

Looking at some of the various videos on Youtube, it seems that a common problem is the user not sliding the bag collar fully into the holder.

When properly fitted and the bag holder is pivoted upwards, the bag appears to cling onto the inlet tube by means of its rubber seal. Although I dare say that a full bag would be heavy enough to drop the holder from the tube, once the compartment door is opened.

Another occasional problem appears to be the user wrenching the bag out of the compartment - complete with holder still attached to the bag collar, and flinging them both into the rubbish bin.

Yup, I thought this sounds about right. In my Miele C3 the blue 'male' bag slider fits very definitively into the 'female' fitment on the vacuum. For whatever reason with the U1 the green 'female' fitment seems like a much more sloppy receptacle and I have to fumble around to ensure the bag slider is properly inserted all the way. It is easy to miss securing it properly. I think because they way it is tucked in the upright vacuum the fitment is always half hidden. With that said when I intentionally tried to mis-fit the insert the baggage door was never allowed to close. I'm just not clear how those leaking bag scenarios were created, unless there was a redesign between 2008 and 2014 (when mine was made) and there is no longer a leaking bag issue. I had seen some videos where once the bag is inserted the fitment can snap up and seal the bag before closing the compartment door. I can tell you my fitment doesn't even try to snap into place, nothing to snap into. But that door design forces the bag slider to be inserted properly and forces the bag to seal. In the picture below you can see the door design that automatically pushes the fitment closed, and if the bag slider is not seated properly the door does not shut.

I wonder if at least some of the leaking bag issues were down to other users using 'pattern spares' bags, rather than genuine Miele bags?

I suppose too, that if the bag was not fully slid home, maybe the users deliberately held the bag holder downwards as they closed the door, allowing the bag holder to escape the 'V' grooves on the door? Then, when the door was forced shut, the continued downward motion might allow the bag holder to 'snap out' with or without breaking.
