Miele SF-HA50 (HEPA filter, new style) appears to have torn?

Hi there happy vacuumers,

I am (or should that be was?) the happy owner of a new S8 UniQ, but am uncertain what has happened to my HEPA filter. This filter is the newer style SF-HA50 filter, which comes in a white casing. My understanding is the HA50 no longer incorporates a generally activated carbon (GAC) layer, but has "improved" air permeability so the suction in the vacuum is supposed to be better.

Please see photos attached... it appears that the edges of the pleats of the HEPA material have cracked or split in a number of places.

What could have caused this? Is this normal?

I have never seen this happen with the older style SF-AH50 which came in a light blue casing. How should I resolve this?

I would contact Miele directly to explain the problem and they may send you a new one.

That's your improved air permeability.

Joking aside, take it back where you bought it, show them what happened and tell the seller you want a new one. Stuff only gets fixed when it starts costing the manufacturer money.

Well, the other thing to remember is, check the inside of your S8 - mine (an eco model) has a black carbon material filter that is fitted to the vent. It is supposed to be removed if fitting either the AAC or HEPA filter. If I don't take it off when the AAC filter is fitted, the vent makes a whistling noise. 


 


Since Miele have gone and changed the HEPA filter so that there is no longer a carbon insert, a few of the HEPA filters have had cracks appearing in the paper, where, sadly the constant high suction rips it open. The only way around this is to buy the AAC filter.

I had this happen to the HEPA filters of the Dyson DC01 De Stijl.

I had this happen to a Miele S5 HEPA filter WITH the activated carbon layer also. Not a biggie for me as it came already fitted to the vac, and I was planning to substitute a standard electrostatic Air Clean filter when it was due for replacement anyway.

Had I bought the cleaner specifically for that feature, however, I'd have been none too pleased. Especially given the cost of the filter, and the fact the vac itself had an easy life being used in rotation with three others.

I see this rather often from Miele but the biggest culprit of this is AEG/Electrolux Hepa filters, especially on their bagles models, without a proper cyclone the dirt gets straight through the sponge filter and ruptures the hepa filter. 


 


Most of the time when we see this on Miele's its because the bag has burst or it was not fitted properly

I would find it hard to break or burst a Miele synthetic dust bag. It isn't impossible but at the same time it's not the paper ones that the older ones use and this newer filter on the market is only a couple of months old since they replace the old HEPA filters - the paper used, now that the carbon insert has gone could be the stumbling block, Gareth.


 


Most owners, especially collectors will also know that the filter is seating properly when it clicks into the machine. 


 


I think the problem has more to do with the newer filters from Miele. Its a reason to why I've stuck with the AAC types.

Synthetic bags burst all the time,Mostly due to over filling. The cleaning lay's just keep vacuuming till something pops.


BTW not to sure why you guys are only getting this filter now but we had them on the s5 already.
