Miele S8 now available from John Lewis

Matt,
What a great idea! Buy the vacuum to match the color of your car. Beautiful car!
Miele has got it going on. They know how to market new products (at least to vac collectors).
I have always liked brown in vacuum cleaners too. I think it started way back when Hoover used to make the brown finish on the old machines from the 1940's.
I sure like the looks of the machine. I bought a new Rainbow last year because they had a new model but almost everything you touched were REAL improvements for the user. Still it was the lighted water basin and lighted power nozzel that tipped the scale for the purchase. I am sure I will have to have one of these lighted new Miele's too just for fun.
Thanks again for taking the time to share the pictures!

Miele S8 Continuum

From the photo in that link, it looks as though the machine has full remote control; the "+" and "-" power buttons don't appear to be present on the cleaner's control panel.

Miele S8 now available at John Lewis

Hey guys I was about $204.00 off with my price guess if the price of $1399.00 in the add is correct. Then You would need to add the cost of shipping or bought local the sales tax.

McHardy Vacs in Canada seem to.....

McHardyvacs in Canada is a great place for Miele Vacuums. They seem to be proactive on new models. I know when I bought my top of the line model called Jupiter. This has the handle controls, they were coming out soon with a Black model called a Continuum. They are great to deal with and that site has recently allowed you to pick your power nozzle, as an add on to your model. It is a family run business that has been in business for years. Graham ships to the USA and I had mine in a few days. I have had vacuums or supplies take weeks to get here from Canada. They evidently know how to ship to the us without getting delays in customs. The only thing is, the Miele warranty will not carry over to the US. Graham explained this to me and I have bought two so far and not had any problems with either.

Sincerely,

Hey guys, don't forget the U.S and the U.K get different machines, so even if our Miele vacs are cheaper, the U.S will probably get a bigger line of models for a bigger market share and probably a power head as standard. As I've said I'm prepared to like the new Miele S8 but it doesn't really bring much to the table that my Sebo D2 can't do already and having to pay TOL for extra LED lights is just a nonsense; at least the D4 Premium comes with a power head as standard in the UK and everywhere else.

I can't deny however that the S8 looks ultra cool, hip and very modern ALTHOUGH as v6mj states, if it has the same quality as my S6, I wouldn't feel obliged to trust that the body would be free of scrapes a year after ownership. Miele have a knack of dressing up the machines with a bumper and black PVC plastics are obvious parts of the body that would get abuse, but its the side of the body at the top where my S6 seems to get the worst of bumps and scrapes, and indeed any Miele vacuum I've ever had in the cylinder line up seems to be badly protected. Pity Miele don't produce covers for the bodies entirely instead of massively overcharging for a Velvet covered model - and even at that I would be suspect over the Velvet covering actually able to protect the body of the vacuum; as an owner, it's no matter to me whether a machine gets scraped but if you're a collector AND an owner, it can be hard to put up with.

Turbo500 - the Sebo X4 Excel was created only because JL were fed up having to pay off the cost price differences of the older X4 Extra when they ran their "knowingly undersold" policy. The X4 Excel is a sole exclusive to JL - Comet, Currys et al only sell the blue and orange X4 compared to the blue and silver, and the colour difference, fixed pricing and name are the only differences.

Sebo_ fan, I know. That's why I brought it up. The excel being the JL exclusive and more expensive, I was meaning this situation with the s8's would change once other retailers begin stocking it

Yes but Comet are known for changing prices. I was really shocked a few months ago when my burgundy red S381 that originally (and always) cost £99 suddenly shot up to £249! I emailed Comet about it and they responded that it was "special stock that would be exclusively ordered from Miele." It may well have been but I'd never go about suggesting that £249 is good value for an older base Miele cylinder vac, no matter how well built they are - when there are cheaper priced S5's and other models sitting alongside them from the Miele range sold at the same stockist. They now have a base S700 model that is around £299 which is far too expensive.

Ty for the link. I'm looking at their "Compare S8 models" section right now and Miele UK have listed "lightweight" as a feature, yet none of them are lightweight and have big red X's to indicate what the models don't have. Do you think this would be a disservice to Miele's new S8?

Well, I got to Glasgow today and visited John Lewis. Good to see the base S6 blue model reduced to £134 instead of the £200 asking price when it was first launched - but they also stocked a red Bosch model that is smaller and more compact at the same price - just to confuse the buyers!

I was really disappointed with the S8 though - they had the black base model on display and the top of the range UniQ 8. I even got to test run the top of the range model and discovered few surprises.

If you're savvy enough you can actually order the LED handle for ANY Miele canister vacuum. It only has a button to switch the light on, although I had trouble turning the thing off! The AirTeq branded single pedal floor head is also far easier to move than my own double pedal SBD 650, and I will be trying to get that floor head (SBD 285-3) as the pedal won't get stuck under radiators or be such a pain to move when I vacuum with my socks on and no shoes. Lacking the "Air Teq" transfer, it's the same suction only floor head you get with the S5.

The S8 UniQ is a lovely machine to look at, but I was really surprised to find how cheap the pick open door for the optional plug in socket on the main machine is. I expected a better precision here than just cheap plastic. Also, whilst I was impressed with the Velvet lined tool caddy underneath, the lid is horribly thin - on both models - and the whole thing flexes easily and isn't as well made IMHO as the S5. I do however like the almost flush touch single plus and minus control buttons for the suction controls, but it doesn't bring anything much to the table other than the fancy LED lights which do nothing for me and the Comfort rewind function I'm already used to with my own S6 Ecoline.

At the moment I'll just say that my Sebo D2 has far better quality and is just a bit lighter to carry. Even Sebo's exterior body feels better made and is a far more substantial design than the S8. It is true that whilst the Sebo is a tad noisier than the S8 UniQ (or comparatively the S8 black baseline model), the S8 is a bit more nimble due to its shape until you put it in the upright position and find out that it's actually pretty tall and narrow. Overall, its a fitting replacement for the S5, but I still can't get used to the Grub look though and if I was to buy the bigger bagged Miele vacuum, I'd probably settle for the base S5.

Much prefer the S4 and S6 for compactness, end of the day.[this post was last edited: 7/8/2012-19:52]

LED handle light

Ryan,

You can't turn the light off yourself. According to the instruction book, it turns itself off after approximately 30 seconds.

still at least the car matches my Louis Vuitton : )

that has to be one of the best things Ive read on here so far, omg I love it I find that with my LV practically anything goes with it presume you got the monogram print, I may get an S8 at some point maybe one with the parquet tool [this post was last edited: 2/17/2014-10:18]
