Miele S5210 Euro vac

Yesterday I found and bought the vacuum from Goodwill because I was certain I could convert it to US standard use. Normally one has to use some sort of gadget (Inverter?) in order to power it correctly.

Using instructions on Google, I took it apart this morning. Fast forward, I bought a used motor and installed it. Partially assembled, and a temporary plug, I tested the motor.

Consulted with an electrician friend who confirmed the cord wires on the cord reel are a smaller gage and can will heat up when conducting electricity.

I found some instructions online which should allow me to replace the cord on the reel. Very tricking and I hope it works.

If anyone has ever done this, PLEASE weigh in. Any tips are welcome short of replacing the entire cord reel.

Your electrician friend is right

about the cord; since the machine is designed to run at 220V, it's going to draw more amps when running at 120V, necessitating the use of a cord with heavier gauge wires. The cord that it came with is probably either 18 or 20 gauge, so you'll probably have to use a 16 gauge cord to run it at 120V.

Providing that the instructions you found online are decent, you shouldn't have a problem winding them on to the existing cord reel. Of course, your new cord will be shorter to a degree, since it's thicker and will take up more room on the reel.

18 AWG is good up to 1200 watts. Of course it's not so easy to measure the gauge of the wire.

Update Ideas wanted

I could never get the speed controller to change speeds after I replaced the Euro 240 with a 120.
I brought it in and a new controller was ordered which did not work either. After they did more investigating with experts, I was given it back and told it is the wrong motor.

An electronics buddy and I will be checking the wiring, but I have been told by a few folks, the motor should work.

We suspect the wiring harness may be incorrect where it plugs into the motor????

Anyone have this every happen?

I'd have to know A LOT more about the machine if I was going to theorize why the speed switch isn't working. I am assuming the motor runs though? Is it possible the motor you have is a single speed? Or perhaps it's connected wrong? ie low speed is connected to high and high to low, that might make it *seem* like it's running on high all the time. You mentioned a control unit. If the speeds are controlled by a computer type thing, it's entirely possible that unit is not getting enough voltage, because it might be trying to convert 220v (that doesn't exist) down to whatever low voltage the computer needs.

I am not sure why you didn't just buy a power voltage converter? No need to tear the vacuum apart and fiddle around with motor swaps and trying to make a 220V vacuum 120V by buying one piece at a time.

Just plug the vacuum in and go. You need the biggest one because the Miele is a powerful machine (you multiply the max wattage of the vacuum by 2 and then round up to the nearest size). I will add the Vacuum model number and motor part# as soon as I take it apart. I have to carefully take off the button/peddles.

As for the converter, not interested in spending more as I MAY sell this one.

I can say that the motor runs on MAX which I have heard advised not to select MAX to conserve the motor.

I will check into what you mentioned concerning a multi-speed motor. I can say definitely, this is not the motor that came with it.
