You got a great deal on that machine. That is the largest machine Miele has ever made, even the new S8, with the same size bag and motor, is substantially smaller and probably weigh half as much. That machine retailed with SEB236 (Biggest Nozzle) For around 1200 dollars when it was new, so you definitely got a good deal on it. It takes the G/N Style dust bags, which are the largest they make. I think it's a rule to only use genuine bags and filters in a Miele. Using Envirocare or knock off bags, as good as they may be when compared to other OEM bags, just do not compare to the 9 layer AirClean bags that Miele makes. They have self-sealing collar, instead of the old style that sealed whenever you pulled them out, still causing a dirt poof. The genuine G/N bag package will include the pre-motor filter with it. The HEPA filter should probably be replaced as the last order of genuine filters that came in, that still were the Active HEPA, didn't have Miele written into the filter frame on them, and I don't think they've done that in quite sometime. The new HEPA Filters don't have the carbon in them, but they have increased the filtration area so they're going to 99.9% down to .01 micron, where the last one, was only down to .03 microns.

How much am I looking at for like 3 - 5 bags and a new filter? I probably won't be able to buy it for a while since I just dropped $100 on Kirby parts, but I'd like to know what I'd be looking at to get a usable machine.

About 75+ miele's parts are spendy. The filter for my Silver moon was 50, and the pack of bags was about 25.

Um, the existing HEPA filter cartridges in blue DO have carbon on the underside - same as the Active Air Clean filters - only difference is that the HEPA filter has paper pleats on the top.
Miele in the UK have just released the TimeStrip versions, which will also fit that model. However the old part number is "SF-AH 30 Active HEPA Filter." The new one with TimeStrip is called "SF-HA 30" and now in white.
The dust bag from Miele that would fit that S600 model is the GN HyClean series as the bag area is bigger, designed to accommodate the bigger capacity.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. Miele USA has discontinued the old style HEPA Filters with Active Carbon. They have been replaced by the new HEPA Filters with the TimeStrip system. The advantages with the new filter is the time strip, which when activated, causes a chemical reaction over a years worth of time, letting you know when it's time to change the filter. Works well in the normal home but if you're a vacuum collector, using multiple machines, it may take 5 years for that machine to get the use it would normally get in a years worth of use in a normal home environment. The reason for the change of filter design is because they wanted more room for more filtration area, so they removed the charcoal and increased the HEPA filter size, increasing its effectiveness to 99.95% down to .01 microns. They needed to make this change to comply with Europe's stringent HEPA 13 standards.
And just a FYI, the HyClean bags were discontinued only a few months after being introduced in the states, too many straps, that were designed to slow the air down, were causing pet hair to not make it the whole way into the bag, so they revised them. They are now known as the AirClean bag. Still 9 layers, still a layer of protective netting to guard against sharp objects piercing the bag, but the straps have been altered and redesigned to better distribute the dirt and deal with pet hair better.

In regards to the pricing on the filters, a quick search on amazon will show you the MAP, Minimum Advertised Price for these products. The G/N bags, which includes the pre motor filter, are 19.95 for 4, normally a year supply for most homes and the HEPA filter for the Blue Moon model is 49.95.

Gosh, the US are quick to move with their Miele parts aren't they? Thank you for that information and for clarifying what is next from Miele with the AirClean series bags. The UK market and Miele UK are still selling HyClean dust bags, here.
The TimeStrip versions of the filters have only just come to the UK market too. Miele haven't added any new ones for the S100/stick vac ranges yet but the price increases for the old AAC and HEPA filter are slightly higher priced. I can't help but feel that the TimeStrip is a marketing spin on owners being forced or pressured to spend more on filter replacements, though.
If the carbon has been removed, I beg to wonder how the filters will cope with pet hair. Normally the old filters are pretty good in my experience, but they need the added carbon.

No you can't clean the filter in bleach. It will have to be replaced. Maybe you can find on one for a cheaper price.
