Miele bag curiosity...

Okay, I finally bought some new bags yesterday, generics of course, but I just got round to fitting them after cleaning out the vac after one of my other "wrong bag" attempts (using Electrolux Contour series bags on their side with the card plate trimmed) had actually leaked like a sieve...

Anyway, the bags I got appear to be GN bags, and the S316i needs FJM, but, the adaptor is the same, just the bag seems a bit bigger (plus point there, cos more bag means better airflow & filtration)!! So, why have a different set of bags when FJM and GN bags will fit in each other's respective vacs? :S

I'd imagine it is just to do with the designed bag size for the machine (I've got my last FJM Hyclean bag fitted to a Miele S381 now, and it fits perfectly).

Most people don't change bags until they are packed completely full- especially with Miele poly bags as they are good at maintaining suction power as they fill- and I could see it getting pretty difficult to remove the bigger GN bag from a smaller Miele cleaner if dirt has moulded it to the shape of the bag compartment!

I've got a feeling the bags for the upright S7 use the same plastic collar too, though not 100% on that...

the same thing happen to me. i found actual miele bags at goodwill but they were gn not fjm what my miele needs. they do work. the fjm holder is a little wider than the gn but when you close the lid, they slide in place. It doesnt leak at all.

The only reason I got the wrong bags was cos I was being served by a rather attractive young woman, and admittedly I got her to look about on the lower shelves for some Victor bags (knowing they wouldn't have any!!), just cos I enjoyed the view...

But anyway, the bags fit fine, the included filters, once trimmed on the respective "cut here for models xxx-xxx" lines, fitted perfectly, I was just left with one other filter that doesn't go into my S316i... :&#92

I know there are people out there who forget (or should that be, do not know?) that a vacuum cleaner needs emptying and thus you get bags packed as hard as a sandbag, just like my LegendII when I loaned it to the brother (packed to the gills but still picking up, and then the filltube split due to old age), but I'm not like that, when a bag starts to get a bad smell that overrides my added scents, it's out the door and into the bin, full or not, I don't like bad smells from vacuums...

Still, the Miele's got a lot of hard work to do over the next month or so, there's a lot of dusty corners to be got at when we move out (well, it'll be hard floors and walls, my super-reliable Sanitaire will take care of the carpets!!), I just hope that sugar through the motor hasn't cause too much of a problem, but the motor gets hot enough due to lack of airflow (Miele design flaw, poorly thought out pre & post filters restricting airflow) that it should burn off...

Well, mine does, even with filters removed the hot air that comes out of it is ridiculous, even my Tristar doesn't belch as much hot air, but then the Tristar's motor isn't 1.5 Kilowatts... :S

I actually left it running here in the living room one night on the lowest speed setting, and it actually warmed the room up to a surprisingly comfortable level, not exactly the pleasantly quiet sound of a proper space heater fan, but, at least I know what to do if I want some warmth and a nicer smell in the room...

It's probably why the hinges on the tool caddy lid were fragile, cos the hot air vents straight onto them (or at least, what's left of them), if I were designing a vac, I wouldn't vent through a lid, I'd vent through the rear or side(s) (like my Electrolux Slimline did actually)... :S

Those old slimlines were briliant , we still get them in for servecing. the only trouble with them were the fans disintergating.


My personal favorite of the lot was the 230 with the manual cord wrap they lasted a lifetime

Mine was a Z1185e, in baby blue/lilac, had the cable rewinder (which was smoother than the Miele's), it worked fine, and when I modified that to use my Eureka Rotomatic PN it was even better, but the bearings were going in it, and seeing how the motors in those things were assembled with the fan somewhat permanently attached, I couldn't fix it, I only really used it for less than pleasant cleaning, and as I had gotten the miele anyway, I decided to give it a clean up and sell it, didn't get much for it though...
