Yes there is an extreme to agitation I am by no means saying the Sebo is weak if you would actually read the post, if someone wants poor agitation Oreck is one of the top. Yes Sebo actually do get some things right for a modern plastic vac, that is why I own one of them. I have used everything from a Riccar, Simplicity and a Sanitaire which are known for having some of the most aggressive brushrolls on my 15 year old plush carpeting. So far after all these years I have not noticed any excessive carpet wear, so these other manufacture must be doing something right.

I have used a Riccar Brilliance, it is a very impressive machine and yes it does have aggressive agitation. I would have thought aggressive agitation would wear carpets faster than less aggressive agitation but I may be wrong. I often am :-))

Marcus you're spot on. A brushroll that's too aggressive will damage a carpet more than save it. That's why the old Hoovers were so good - the smooth, metal beater didn't damage the carpet, but agitated enough to remove the deep down dirt.

Oh haha.I like the Turbo powers. My mother had a Hoover junior. The filtration was terrible. Sucked in one end blew it out the other :-)
Did the turbo powers have a beater bar?

Yes, but it was very different to the older style. Despite being more flimsy than the previous Hoovers, the Turbopower's & Turbomasters were one of the best carpet cleaners ever made.

Which TP Junior was it?

Here are the 2. The first one is the senior brushroll, with 2 rows of bristles and 2 solid, metal beater bars.

The second one is the Hoover Activator that came with the Turbopower, later juniors, Turbopower 2 and early Purepowers. The beaters are moulded as part of the roller and spread out around the whole brushroll.

Oh yeah they are very nice brushrolls. Why did the beater bar go out of fashion? Did the wear quickly?

Chris my mother had the Hoover Junior with the brown bag and attatchable hose. She didn't have a Turbo power sadly. I really do like those machines.

"Why did the beater bar go out of fashion?"

The 'agitator' with the metal beater bars, apparently flattened the pile on some carpets.

The Turbopower 'activator' was supposed to reactivate flattened carpet pile.

Remember also that the agitator body was metal (i.e. expensive). The activator, in comparison, was plastic moulded, thus cheaper to manufacture.

The very last models of Hoover Junior U1104 had the plastic 'activator' (circa 1990), rather than the traditional metal 'agitator'.

circa 1990

They had the activator from about 1986 onwards, after the Senior Powerplus was superseded by the Turbomaster as TOL, Hoover scrapped the metal beater brushroll. The last Junior's were made in 88. They were replaced by the Turbolite.

Not quite.

The 'activator' U1104 Juniors were on still on sale in 1990.

The Turbolite was an American import into the UK. It competed with the Turbopower Softbag.

The true replacement for the Junior was the horrendously atrocious Hoover Sprite.

As promised...

Here's some pics of the Sebo!

In order:

The box as it arrived. I find it funny that it was shipped in a Sebo box!

Maiden Voyage

Love the quick draw hose

Half full bag from first use. Of course, I was pulling out furniture, doing all sorts of things that rarely get done, and shoving it under beds since it fits so effortlessly!
