Member Intro and Hoover Model 62 Questions (When was it made?)

Hi. I'm a new member at the forum here, this is my first post. In early May 2015 I found a Hoover Model 62 at a rummage sale; It worked and I paid a dollar or two for it. It did need a few things: Bellows/Blower Hose, Lightbulb and (maybe) Bag. Just today, 25/June/2015, I visited a vacuum cleaner store and they had some NOS bags (type W in case anyone's reading and wants to know what type they are) along with a light-bulb and some belts. I got all of that, and now all I need is to either duct tape the bellows shut or find one that will fit.

So, my questions are these:
When was the Model 62 manufactured?
What was the original MSRP was for it in the 1950s, without being adjusted for inflation?

I read this vacuum was made somewhere in the 1952-1957 year range.

Also, mine has a number on a plate on the bottom, in the 1.9 million range. Is that a production number?

I worked on the vacuum again today. (I have the bellows covered with duct tape at the moment.)

I noticed the vacuum was leaking dirt a bit, apparently duct tape didn't hold the hole on the handisac bag shut so I put some clear tape on it. (small hole about the size of a pencil's diameter.) I then made sure the clamp at the end was shut well and the bag was on properly. I then tried the vacuum in the house; it blew dirt around. So after cleaning the vacuum's insides and outside a bit (it's so easy to get at all those parts too) I tried it again and it still blew dirt. I noticed the belt cover plate has a rotted/damaged seal around it, made out of cork? Is that the only reason why it could still be blowing dirt or is there a gasket in the machine that seals dirt from the blower to the inside of the vacuum?

I also have a model 62. It's my favorite Hoover. It has a really great sound when it's running. I bought it 35 years ago for $2.35 at a house sale.Back then you could get all the parts you needed. But now it's a problem. The bellows you are going to have to hunt for it, also roller brushes and they are not cheap. your lucky to have found W bags for it. You might be able to switch to the later type A top fill bags if you get the complete bellows assembly from a later 1980's model hoover also you might be able to switch to a later model brush roller if your brushes are wore out.Mine is still original equipment if you want to keep it that way you have to always be looking for a opportunitiy to find parts such as always in your travels be on the look out for a old time vacuum repair shop. Not to many left but sometimes you get lucky. when I go to different citys I look in the phone book and check em out. You should grease your motor bottom bearing and check the brushes also lube the brush roller bearings for a smooth running machine. Good Luck Bill,

If it's blowing dirt out check the rubber seal where the body of the vacuum meets ( attaches )the metal part that attaches to the bellows. Or you tape job is not to good. It's hard to patch a bellows. Also there is a clip that goes on the top of the bag to seal it.

Hoover 62

You were close on the age of the Hoover 62. there were 98,965 of them made from 1950 to 1953 and it was the top of the line in those years.

Try silicone

If you can't find a replacement for that cork seal, go to your local auto parts store and get a tube of silicone. Clean the edges really well and run a bead of silicone around where the seal went. It should hold up pretty well and it's easy to clean off and replace if you need to open it up again.

@hoover61 how many of these model 61 bellows do you have and do you have the metal retainer for the bottom of it where it couples to the vacuum?


Also, how much would be the shipping to 48867 in case I have my moms permission to have them as I do still live with her.

Where in Pennsylvania?

I'm in the Wyoming Valley.between Wilkes -Barre and Scranton..the back side of the Poconos. There are a lot of VCCC members in PA.

I taped the bellows more and now no dust that I can detect blows out of it. I found dust was also blowing from the crevice between the metal on the bellows assembly and the base of the vacuum, so I made a gasket from gauze and medical tape. A previous owner had that same idea; there was already a makeshift gasket there, though not as thick.

I haven't noticed dust blowing from the plate on the bottom but thanks for the suggestion to put silicone there, I may do that if I need to.

The Handisac "W" Bag I got with this (And I have no idea what age it is) is still working after taping it so I haven't opened the NOS package of four yet. Does someone have brushes for the agitator bar? I'm beginning to wonder if some company could make them in small numbers if they have a reference piece or reference pieces. It would be nice.

Belt needed

I am unable to find to find a belt of the correct length for my hoover model 62 they are all too short, I attempted to stretched it with no success. The original belt looks to be at least 4.5" in diameter. Got a eureka belt thought it was bigger still very tight to install. Any help in directing to the correct belt would be appreciated.
