Silly question, have just acquired a Maytag Satellite cheap on an auction site, it would seem that Whirlpool are selling off old stock for very little. Have noticed that under the handle there is a small hole in the steel body. Obviously this is an air bypass so if airflow through the hose drops off the motor still gets some air to help in cooling. Though why it needs a 2 kilowatt motor I can't think, having said that, boy does it suck. Never had a vacuum that was so powerful. Has any one out there got an original Constellation, and does it have this hole?? Any thoughts andyone??

No, other than the hose ports on the top and bottom of my Constellation 858, there are no openings on the vacuum.

Hoover Connie

Hi Phillip, I'am in the US, and have both the white and chrome Connie's. Little Fred told me the reason for the hole was to prevent burn out of the motor in case the hose got clogged. I have scotch tape over both the holes, you think the connie suck's now, wait till you feel the suction after the hole is taped.

The hole served two purposes. One, obviously, is to have a small inflow of air if the main airflow through the hose is blocked. The second is to prevent the Turbo Nozzle from turning too fast. Covering the hole under the handle with tape will increase the speed of the turbo brush to dangerous levels for the plastic bushings.

Electrolux was the first company to have a clean air 'bleed' (on the model G) to prevent motor overheating during clogged or blocked up conditions.

@John

If you have the latest model (in white or stainless steel) that hole is visible when opening up the machine to change the bag. You'll see the hole for the air bleed in the lid.

Model G air 'bleed'

I was told that it also cooled the cordwinder that was first built in on the G.During the 1205 a drain hole was added between rear wheels in case water was picked up by mistake.

Thanks to all for the information. Like the idea of stopping the turbo brush from over speeding, it certainly does spin nicely, though when you put it on the carpet due to the super suck, it does slow the brushroll somewhat. Funny really, here I am in the UK and my two daily drivers are both American. Well the Satellite may be made in China, but it says Maytag on it and my other vac is a Kirby Gen 5. Still have a couple of English machines in the shape of a Hoover 612 and Hoover floor polisher. Must stop buying vacuum cleaners and get out more!!
