Ok, I am convinced that the switch itself is not the culprit. Does anyone see anything wrong with how the switch is wired?

in the first picture.
one wire has to be connected to the top, as you have. the second wire has to be connected to the bottom, where you do not have a screw, just the hole.
 
Like Frank said the two wires should be on the same side,and you do need the screw on the terminal as that is where the prong from the cord is attached. Here is a pic of the switch on my automatic E,should be the same.
