And...

Apparently, as I was writing that post, I did get a reply from Keither, confirming that his current model Legacy has the filter material in the exhaust port.
We still don't know exactly when it started, but whenever they switched to using the louder motor.

Yes I saw that one for same on eBay too just recently and was going to tell you it had the filter in it from the photo with the regular filter out. Perhaps it is for sound deafening or to create a smooth flow or air into the rectangular filter. I might have some of that filter media around the house. Might add it to mine and see if it changes the sound.

Regarding flip over floor tool

Oh and yes, I completely agree with you. I don’t know why they discontinued the flip over rug and floor tool...I love that tool. It’s still made and only standard on the Guardian Platinum.

I’m guessing when the plastic bodied machines became the lower level machines back in the late 80s they continued the single sided floor tool with them as this is how they were made in the Canadian market as the plastic bodies machine were the Canadian machines. The flip over combination tool was then only continued on some of the top of the line machines but there were a few years when it was not included on any machine such as when the Renaissance was the top of the line, it was not included and they may have stopped making it for a few years but then reintroduced it as a top of the line only included tool.

In my experience, Aerus sales is all negotiable so if there’s something you want that’s not included...ask them to throw it in to sweeten the deal and then you’ll buy.

I use my flip over tool a lot, I have mostly hardwoods and a few small area rugs and door mats, when I don’t tfeel like pulling out the power nozzle I just do those rugs with the rug side of the flip over tool. Those small rugs don’t need the power nozzle every time I run the vacuum. I usually just do them about once a month with the power nozzle. Hence the flip over tool is quite convenient for me.

When we lived in a house with wall to wall carpeting and floors in the kitchen foyer and hallways I didn’t use the straight suction side hardly ever, but now I use it more.

I have one with the Electrolux I use as a shop vac...makes the unit very easy to use and versatile.

Jon,

Same here.
When we bought this house, we had hardwood floors installed everywhere but the bathrooms. Which I second guess from time to time, whenever I start missing linoleum/vinyl in the kitchen.
We have two large braided rugs and a few small area rugs and door mats. Nothing with deep pile.
I do pretty much the same thing. I'll use straight suction with the flip tool for regular vacuuming, and the power nozzle when I feel like getting more thorough.
Occasionally, I'll drag out one of the Hoover Convertibles for the rugs, when I want to beat as I sweep as I clean. 😊

Jo,

Aerus still makes the combination/flip-over floor tool for all current canisters, it just isn't standard on the Classic and Legacy. I purchased two black flip-over floor tools for my black legacy one or two years ago... one for weekly use, one as a spare in case the regular one gets messed up. I'm glad they still make them available (you just have to order it).

I agree with the others, the black filter piece inside the motor housing under the after-filter is indeed supposed to be there. It's on my black Legacy, which was purchased brand new, and on my while Guardian Ultra, which I purchased slightly used. It was also on my previous all-white Legacy, so they've clearly been inserting that piece since the 2010s. I didn't realize it was for sound-deadening! How fascinating! The Legacy is noticeably quieter than the Ultra, but I believe the Ultra (which also has the sound-deadening piece) has a strong motor. It had a 20-year warranty (vs 10 on the Legacy) and seems to push more air.
