Lux Guardian Platinum Filter(s)

Last night I changed the bag in my Lux GP for the first time. The Light hadn't came on yet, but I just felt like changing, as it was almost full." I am using the white, cloth bags.

Anyway, I also checked the HEPA behind the bag and it was clean. So for giggles I pulled the Long Life HEPA from underneath and it was BLACK. I know it was white before, is this just new machine carbon from the brushes? With the first filter being clean, I can't see that it is anything else.

The Manual says that discoloration does not affect performance, and this filter is rated to last five years. I was just surprised with so much carbon from a brand new machine.

The carbon residue is normal. My Guardian Platinum's post-motor HEPA filter is also black. Running the machine on full speed will cause the carbon brushes to wear much faster than if you used the Auto setting. The slower the motor runs, the longer its life. Don't be concerned by the carbon residue, it's normal.

It just so happens I checked mine today, after changing the bag about 5-6 times. It had a very small amount of black on it. Not enough to warrent changing it. I Will not wait five years to change, but so far so good.

I was never really sure where to set the machine for Auto. When first turned on it is at full speed. The manual says "Low for curtains, Med for upholstery, High for carpet." When do you actually put it on Auto? Should I leave it on Auto all the time? For carpet and stairs I leave it on high, For the furniture I turn it to auto because it sucks so hard it will stop the Sidekick's brushroll. Haven't done anything delicate, but when I cleaned the dryer using auto with the crevice tool on it turned down to as low as the motor would go.

On High this thing will suck marbles through a garden hose. And quiet, have I mentioned how quiet it is, well of course I have.

I leave mine on Auto all the time (including carpets) except when vacuuming bare floors - then I use High.

This video from a dealer in VA shows how the Platinum has now been upgraded to automatically shut off when the bag is full instead of just turning on the bag full indicator like my Platinum does. I don't know why they took this feature away initially on the first generations of Platinums but I'm glad they have put it back. The guy in the video makes it sound like it is a wonderful new invention.

Thanks for sharing the information. I thought all Lux machines shut off automatically when the bag was full. He gives a nice demonstration. I hope those new style bags will correct the reported dust leaking problems.
In the video, the machine is nice and quiet but the power nozzle has a high pitched and unpleasant tone. Sounds like my old Electrolux from 2001. It may just be the way he had the recorder.
It looks like a very nice machine and we sure want Aerus to be successful.

Not having the auto shut off was one of my complaints when I first got my Platinum. I even called the Aerus support line to confirm that the machine was not supposed to shut off - just turn on the full bag indicator light. I guess they must have had a lot of complaints so added back the feature. My power nozzle has the high pitched squeal as well which I never noticed with my 6500 or 9000 models.

I spoke with a local vac shop

We don't have an Aerus dealer here anymore. Emporia--70 miles away.

He actually felt the discoloration on the long life after filter was carbon shedding from the activated carbon filter in the bag chamber. Said the carbon brushes were fine, and will last a long time.

I got my Guardian Platinum from Rich Luisi, vice president of Aerus. I knew it was a prototype when I got it. Mine has always shut off automatically when the bag was full, so I remember being surprised when no one else's model did. Rich also put the brush roller with the green stiff bristles in mine before it was shipped. It also has the original power nozzle top, not the black one like the current model.

did they originally remove the auto-shutoff feature so that they could stick the vacuum on the side of the wall for long periods of time to show off the power of the motor?


 


I'm glad that the feature has returned, especially considering that it's an Electrolux hallmark, but I have a few questions:


 


1) How can you tell a *new* auto-shutoff Platinum from an old one? (If I were to buy one from my dealer, I'd want a new one)


 


2) For laughs, how many machines are going to wind up broken from a fall off the wall thanks to this new feature?
