Looking for Dyson demo videos that show the reality of Dyson

It's been a long time since I have posted. Some of you may remember that I had BF problems with the whole vacuum thing a year ago. I am happy to say I have a new BF and he knows about the whole vacuum thing and we talk about them and he's tried out my Kirby Sentria. No problems!

He is a Dyson worshipper, and I'm always trying to get him to realize that maybe it's not the best vacuum. He claims that it is made out of this special plastic that is supposed to be super durable (fact checkers, what are the facts?). Because of the way it looks, he believes it is a perfectly engineered vacuum (I think he's been mesmerized by the advertising, just like the general public). He makes these claims, knowing nothing about vacuums. Then when the Dyson commercial comes on showing it picking up all the dirt and the competitors picking up hardly anything...I can only roll my eyes.

I am looking for good youtube videos that are FAIR, give good info, and aren't too long and wordy that I can send to him as good rebuttal for why I don't like Dyson. I tried to show him one video, but since it was at a vacshop, he claimed it was biased to the other machine (as if the Dyson TV commercials aren't biased). Anyway, I'm not trying to start a war here, just having a fun back and forth over vacuums with my BF! I figure vacuumlanders are the experts! What can I tell him and what videos can I show him that show the reality of american Dysons?

(btw, his opinion on the Kirby is neutral/somewhat favorable and he thinks the Miele s7 is ugly)

Dyson, well now the new DC41 etc is out, they are now made with flimsy plastic, they flex almost everywhere!. Why is it that Dyson used to use good quality parts (e.g metal wand), and now they use the plastic ones?
I steered the Dyson DC41, and half of the body and the handle twisted, and it was flexible like rubber. It even felt like snapping.

I would confidently throw a Kirby down the stairs, and definately not the Dyson. I wouldn't even drop a Dyson from 30cm high! (maybe the wheeled ones, but the vac will get either a bent wheel, or a clip breaking off or something)

There are many Dyson alternatives now which are just as good, so the non Dyson machines are fantastic.

Which Dyson does your BF have BTW? I will tell you the weaknesses of that particular model

I know of several videos that prove the downfalls of Dyson or most any bagless vacuums but they are all filmed at vac shops so you probably can't use them.

Any Direct Air Vacuum Is Superior

Any all metal vacuum will last far longer.

Bagless vacuums are ridiculously complex, expensive to repair and need to be dumped very frequently.

Bags cost about the same as a bottle of water. How that cost got to be a significant factor must be due to clever marketing... or clueless consumers!

Here is a video comparing the Dyson DC41 to the Hoover Air Pro upright, showing how the Hoover outcleans the Dyson. Then there's the video the same man does comparing the DC41 to the DC65. He states that the DC65 picked up 94% of his test dirt, vs 91% for the Hoover Air Pro. That should show your boyfriend that the "best" Dyson made can outclean a cheaper competitor, but not by much, but more importantly shows the Hoover is a much better value for the money & you don't need to spend $700 dollars just to get a decent cleaner! Best part I like about the videos is this guy is more than fair....he measures out the test dirt on a scale, etc. He doesn't even bash the Dyson! If your BF doesn't find this video fair, I don't think he would be willing to give any video a chance.

Another good idea is to go to your library & get your hands on some back issues of Consumer Reports. Yes, I know us collectors don't always agree with their opinions. But what it does show is that thru professional testing, many other brands clean just as well or can even outclean a Dyson. Such as the $100 dollar Hoover Tempo, Kirby Sentria, & Eureka Smartvac. After seeing the Dyson vs Hoover videos & the other YouTube videos made by vac shops showing theirs are better, I think your BF would have a hard time sticking by Dyson.

Arghh, another dyson fan boy. To be honest I can see the appeal in them and they do have a lot going for them. Their tools are extremely good and their bagless technology is the best, and their machines look fantastic, plus dyson customer service is excellent, and their pick up performance is not bad, but people think they are the best, when obviously that is not true. If they were built in England again with the quality materials they once used, they would be a much better product. I grew up with a DC01 and it lasted for 12 years and was still going strong and nothing broke of it. Built like tanks.

May be it's because of the Malaysian build quality, taking advantage of cheap labour and cheaply sourced local materials. Who knows, but they are far too expensive for what they are.

If he actually owns one schedule him a Rainbow demo or any of the more expensive vacs that demo in home. Dyson owners are amongst the easiest people to sell a Rainbow to in my experience. You can see it on video all you want but seeing it in person is still much more convincing. My Dysons can't outclean a Fantom Thunder which is based on Dyson's own technology and is over 15 years old, simply because the brush rollers are not as good. To top it off the new ones seem flimsy compared to old ones. I own two of them and have had my share of experience with them. Using tools is difficult because the machines don't balance particularly well (unless it is a canister model) and the strong suction tends to tip the vac over because of it. The ball works ok but is hard on the wrist over time unless you are vacuuming in completely straight lines. The bins are messy to empty, so much so that I have to empty it because my wife will have an asthma attack from the dust that gets sent flying. You can't simply gently dump it because what ends up happening is fine dirt eventually plugs up the upper cyclones so you have to give it a couple of whacks, dust goes everywhere. You still have filters to wash. I actually think the newer ones filter worse through the ever more cyclone assemblies than the old ones did, let alone early 11 amp Fantom Thunders where they pumped the dirt through the motor to the HEPA filter and the filter still was very clean months later (trust me I own one, it was heavily used at the time too). I hardly use my DC33, but the promotor filter always ends up dirtier then my DC07 for roughly the same amount of use. They don't groom carpets very well. I don't immensely dislike them, I just find you spend a lot and get a lot of hype for what you actually get in return. If you are buying a vac from Wal-Mart/Target it is probably the best choice virtually everything else is throwaway quality, beyond that some of the Kenmore canisters at Sears and Kmart are probably a better choice. Right now I consider Dyson to be a high end discount store vacuum.

It is like buying a 70" LED TV at Wal-Mart, it is the most expensive thing on the shelf, it's a name brand, it is kind of decent but lacks some features. You do OK if you buy it, but merely OK. Then again you could go to Sesrs or Best Buy and they have a different version of the same TV, it connects to the internet, has more inputs, reduced glare screen etc. but costs more.

I just think if you are ready to shell out $500+ on a Dyson at least look at the options at a vac store.

Look up Dyson vs Riccar or Dyson vs Simplicity on Youtube. Others like Miele or Royal compare just as well, but the demos done with the Tacony vacs are probably the most impressive. All of them really shake loose the dust, as can be seen in the Dyson vs Riccar video above.

I don't understand why you don't just let him Love the Dyson. My new BF thinks they are the greatest. I let him think that, and I come home to a clean house. There's no reason to not just let him think it's the best. The DC17 is an awesome vacuum, and will outclean most vacuums. If he's happy using a Dyson, and think's it's perfect, just let him think that.

I'm with Tom... not surprising since I am also a Tom... let him think the Dyson is the bees knees. Domestic peace is worth more than that. However, if he's bashing Electrolux - Aerus/Kirby/Rainbow/Filter Queen, etc and throwning shade all over the place, then it's time to slap a little sense into the boy. He can have a favorite, but there are more than one 'best' vacuum. I was once a Dyson devotee... and I still regret passing on my Fantom Thunder, but over time and with much experimenting I now value other brands much more than Dyson.

I agree with Tom & Tom , I think if you are brand bashing not accepting anything else then that's where you just have to be more open. I particularly hate Dyson, or love them either. I think they are the best currently available version of Cyclonic filtration vacuums. I think the Fantom Thunder cleans better. I prefer their older machines, they seem less flimsy. I think Rainbow is a better bagless vacuum if you prefer bagless. I probably have 30 vacs around here, I like them all, some more than others, or for certain purposes.

I am not a fan of Dyson, but I say the best vacuum cleaner out there is one with a willing arm attached to it. If he loves his Dyson, let him love his Dyson.
