Does anyone have advice on how to effectively paint the depressed "Kirby" logo in the red plastic belt lifter on the 508-512 models? I know that the logo is supposed to be light gray/off-white, but the one I have has lost most of the original paint through age and flaking off.

I thought about cleaning/degreasing the whole thing first, then carefully applying a light coating of oil or something similar to interfere with paint adherence on the raised surface, leaving the depressed areas (which are the areas I want to retain the new paint) to hold the new finish. Finally, I would just buff off the surface to expose the red plastic surface once again.

You could use model paint and a very fine brush to repaint the recessed logo.
I had to touch up the logo on my 505 and just so happened to have a red with an almost identical shade to the belt lifter logo. You'd never tell.

I'm sure you could get hold of a small pot of model paint with a close match and paint it back in.
I'd recommend getting the correct thinners for paint to, that way if you go out side the recessed area by accident, then a little thinners on a cloth can be used to wipe over the belt lifter and take the extra off.
