Recent foot surgery has necessitated my partner doing the lion's share of the cleaning. Our Lindhaus upright is too heavy for his back. I'm looking for something great cleaning and lightweight (like around 10 lbs.), ability to turn off the brushroll (for wood/tile floors), bagless would be OK, onboard hose/tools would be great.I know about old vacs, not too up to date only newly available. Reasonably priced would be welcome (vicinity of $150-$175) Any suggestions?

Carpet

The rsl10a with the metal brush roll is about 9.8lbs. it will run used about $150. Iirc it's a 5.5 amp motor. It's a two speed. It doesn't shut off the brush roll but it works well on all surfaces except thick carpeting.
I had a rsl4 and it was a great vacuum.

Before giving up on the Lindhaus, You might want to modify your technique. Tom Gasko showed me that if you can use your legs instead of back/arms.

X2 on a canister...

I have to agree with vacuumdevil. A canister, especially with a power nozzle, gives you the performance of an upright while supporting less of the machine's weight with your arms and back and they're far more maneuverable in tight spaces. Some people don't like dragging the motor unit around like a trailer but I don't find this to be a problem. Just place it strategically and use the length of the hose and wand to get that part where you need to go.

I like the Hoover WindTunnel Max UH30600. It’s a very good carpet cleaner according to Consumer Reports and weighs only 17 lbs which is lighter than a lot of the other high performing vacs. It only costs about $180 and has a new “touchless” bag disposal system that drops the bag into the garbage bin with the touch of a button. There is also a foot pedal to shut off the brush roll for better bare floor cleaning.

Upright

I'm guessing that part of the question was overlooked.
You can consider a shark rocket duo clean. I bought a new in box two years ago for $80.
It doesn't have on board tools but you take off the power head and the long wand. You attach a power nozzle between ones used on cannisters and regular power nozzles. It actually did very very well on getting deep fur off a carpeted cat house.
I'll attach pics so you can see.

Made a decision-thanks for all your help!

After much searching, review reviewing and online shopping, I had almost made a decision on an Oreck, but the issue of no hose for above the floor cleaning bugged me (also reviews which cited loud, high piched whiny motors held my finger from hitting the "buy it now" button. In the end, we bought a Hoover Air steerable upright at Best Buy:$159 including tax and a five year extended warranty.

I have one of those, my second one! I got it last year at Target for $98 when they clearanced. It's fairly quiet and grooms very well and a nice long cord.

If it isn’t quite light enough...

Return it and get the shark rocket. I have one. There are many different models and tons of attachments including a flex hose option. I have a bad back and cannot use even the easiest of true uprights. I have Aerus/Electrolux canisters and also the Shark rocket. No back issues with either.
