I don't know if this is the correct forum or not but I found these today. They both work, and need a little cleaning up. I didn't have a Eureka FAG bag, so I used a Hoover C bag on it to test it. The Eureka is self-propelled and and came from the Salvation Army Thrift Store; the person who bought it originally paid $12.99. Someone moved out of the house behind and and didn't want them so I took them home. The zippers and outer bags are in pretty good shape. They could use a little cleaning but what should I clean them with? The bulb is burned out on the Hoover, but that should be easy enough to replace.

I would like to take them completely apart and clean them, but I don't know exactly how to do that, I will take a closer look at them in a little while. It's a shame that the only carpets I have are in the basement.

Exterior Cleaning

Most of the black stuff on the Eureka is coming off, with Mean Green, which I think is just scuff marks from furniture, and not scratches like I originally thought. Once I get them both cleaned up, I will put up the after pictures.

Eureka

I got the top all cleaned up on the price tag and a piece of masking tape that said self propelled on it removed. The chrome cover on the bottom of the machine is like new no scratches or rust on. The beater bar is in excellent shape as well, just few specks of rust here and there.

I wiped the vinyl back inside and outside with a damp cloth and it's hanging up on my back porch drying. I wasn't sure if I could get it completely wet or not.

Can someone tell me how to remove the hood on the top? It's been a while since I've taken apart a Eureka that I've forgotten how. Once the top hood is off, what should I be looking for besides the dirt?

Model Numbers:

The Hoover is Model #U4311, Serial #00091066
The Eureka is Model #5047D, Serial #26005942

I got the outside cleaned on the Hoover as well, it cleaned up quite nice. I need to do something with the vinyl bag, it stinks pretty bad when the vacuum is running. Would it hurt the vinyl bag to spray it with Odo-Ban or Frebreze? I'm going to get a package of bags for the Eureka tomorrow.

Hood

A little bit of paint came of the hood. Not bad for a throw away. Dave, yours is a little more powerful than mine, I think mine only has 4.8. How does the hood come off, I need to clean her out inside.

Eureka self propelled

Does anyone have info about the production dates of these? I have the ESP 2 speed Maroon version. I know Eureka made a blue version (my dream machine).

Nice Work, Jim!

Looks like they both cleaned up nicely, they turned out beautiful!
As for removing the hood, their should be 2 screws on the bottom of the cleaner. Remove them and it should come right off.

Hoover

The Hoover has a bad odor while it's running. I pretty sure it has something to do with the vinyl bag. Is it ok to hand wash the vinyl bags or spray them with Frebreze?

Thanks

Thanks Jeff for the info and compliment. I will probably work on it a little later today. I'm going to get some bags for the Eureka today.
