Look what I brought home today!

So a friend of ours called me the other day and told me about a Lewyt at a thrift store... so I went and checked it out today!

I've never seen one like this! I called Tania and emailed her a picture -- she thinks it's from about 1962 or 1963. We agreed that because of the new design, it must be a Shetland product--from shortly after they bought Lewyt from Lewyt. We think this because of the fact that there's no "SCB" tags on it, or any mention the Shetland name.

Anybody have any ideas or more info?

I've never seen a hose made out of this material. It's actually a pretty heavy, dense hose.

Hey Fred:

Well - to begin with from everything I've been able to find they didnt start making that body style till 1964. The Brown and cream ones were made from 64 to 68 but the style of rug nozzle that yours has didn't appear till late 1965 or early 66. I do have the instruction manual from the 1964 model if you'd like me to scan a copy for you.

Incidentally the hose is heavy because its actually a metal hose covered with plastic. They were the delux hose at the time, although Lewyt also had a normal style hose too. The grill and brush strip are also missing from the small nozzle.

Various similar models were put out at the same time by Shetland/Lewyt all in the same color combinations with variations depending on what the store purchasing agent wanted for quality/price range. The variations included standard or delux hose, brushed metal or chrome wands / hose ends, suction controll on machine, toggle or step on switch, cord reel, attachment holder, floor brush and felt pad for rug nozzle.

This picture is of the standard version of this machine (model 2812). Note the rug nozzle and lack of suction controll or cord reel.

This was the delux version with all the bells and whistles except for the chrome wands- model 2311

Lewyt also made an even cheaper model line with most of the same variations. This was the model 2121 Note this version has the new rug nozzle, cheaper style hose but with chrome wands, no cord reel, no tool caddy and no suction controll.

I had one...

Someone gave me,It must have been the Delux or MOL. It was just like your 2311 Doug.except it had a green bottom,white hose/attacments and no cord reel. Even the dusting brush bristles were white, and like new. I think the person who owned it never used that attacment but the rest were heavily used.

I had one of these once upon a time, practically mint in the original box. In a moment of desperation put it on eBay and the bidding went through the stratosphere to my grateful amazement. "Whew knew?!"

Fred, when i was in my first two years of college the lady I rented a room from had this same machine which she got in 1968. The only difference I see in yours is the switch. Hers had a plastic peddle one. Just wondering if maybe at some point yours had that too? Great little machine!! Congratulations. Terry

We had a Coronado version of this style cleaner when I was little, before we bought the Convertible and Porta-Power in '76. Ours had a suction control on the top but the color scheme was similar and the hose and tools were the same. "All Metal Body" sticker was identical, I forgot about that detail! What fun to see it again, I can't wait to play with it and hear it.

Green Stamps!!

Fred, what memories! I had that EXACT machine, metal hose and all, when I was.....much younger! I got it with accumulated Green Stamps that gave my tongue quite the work out, perhaps in preparation for later uses It was not the quietest machine (I had one foot in the Electrolux camp even then) but it was fun. The hose was somewhat unique. Thanks for the blast back, Fred.
