Hey guys,I was reading this old Vacuette add (Today's Vacuum of the day) And noticed in the bottom text box,It reads "It's price is only about half what you would willingly pay for a really efficient vacuum cleaner-It costs nothing for electricity-Nothing for upkeep".

Pardon me,But did they just Bad-mouth their OWN Vacuum cleaner?

I'm pretty sure what they meant was that it was only half the price of an efficient, motor-driven vacuum cleaner, but it was just phrased awkwardly and the copywriter simply didn't catch it.

In a similar vein, there was a Culligan Water Softener commercial years ago, which advised viewers to "Call your Culligan man. He's under water in the Yellow Pages."

Bottom line is they are saying that for about 1/2 the price of an efficient vacuum you can buy the Vacuette.  However it does not say that the Vacuette is actually as efficient as the more expensive vacuum but it comes across that way just by the wording.. So in other words even if it isn't as efficient or good as the more expensive one, they haven't actually told a lie.

It's called ad-speak. Where they say something in such a way that you think you're getting something good or better when you're probably not..

Another example of this... are the many commercials that say things like:

No other detergent  outperforms ours.    or

No other bleach outperforms Clorox Bleach..

which means

No other bleach outperforms Clorox bleach BUT Walmart Bleach can perform just as well (prolly costs less as well). It just doesn't "outperform" it

...

Vacuette

What they meant to say is that it costs half the price of any other efficient cleaner...which shows to go ya that you should say what you mean and mean what you say.

As I read it, some what light-heartedly, there was a accidental undertone from the makers themselves that their product was half the price and no where near as good. As I read it, that was what the person who posted this message was feeling too. I have a feeling the joke has sadly been somewhat lost on the forum.

May I add that I for one really appreciate the Large clear scan of the advertisement...for my pictures file.

Too often images posted are too small for reproduction or seeing detail and text.

Your Forum Decorum and manners are impeccable...and yes, your syntax (syntactical?) interpretation made me chuckle in appreciation, too.
