The arrival of sofas and vacuums and air conditioners and the first of the summer heatwaves has spurred another round of organizing projects.
It also helps keep my mind off of not being able to join the Rainbow Rodeo in Texas next week. And, it keeps you all entertained while the luck7 & plucky attendees hit the roads, tracks and airways for Austin.
As I've mentioned I have had great success keeping my 116 year old brick cottage cool (69 F) and dry using one portable AC unit on each floor. Located in the centre of the livingroom against an inside wall, the exhaust hose and drain tube run through the heating grate to a dedicated duct that then runs 16 feet over to a basement window outlet. The drain tube runs on a slope along the main beam back 20 feet to the floor drain. A perfect maintenance-free system. Yes, this one 8,000 btu Danby running on de-humidify 24/7 does the whole main floor!
Up until this year I had the older Danby unit with oscillating directional vanes sitting on the floor, and then up on a 12" high platform, cooling the room. I find running them on De-humidify only 24/7 does the trick until massive humidity and 90 F temperatures require full AC.
This would blow the cool air into the side of the ratty old couch but the vanes could direct the air past the couch and into the computer room where I spend most of my time.
This year I assembled one of the 3 foot high wire frame shelving units and placed the Danby on top.
The diference is spectacular. Now the cool air is free to blast into the room above the furniture setting up a very nice breeze, or I can angle the horizontal vanes down on to the new sofa for instant relief when returning home.
The cats have always loved positioning themselves in the path of the breeze or even snoozing on the flat top of the unit.
Anyway, the view from the new sofa. (cabinet and tabletop clutter being reduced little by little)
