Late 80's Electrolux PN5 = which current version??

Which of today's Electrolux models would be the equivalent to my PN5? I bought my Electrolux PN5 in the late 80's and still love it! However, my house caught on fire earlier this month (3/16) and the insurance will replace all electronics. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

The PN5 refers to just the power nozzle.


I assume you want to replace the whole vacuum?


The PN5 power nozzle came with several models of Electrolux canister vacuums.

If you are just asking about the Power Nozzle and NOT the whole unit. There is no current equivalent to the PN5. The PN5 was not vented and sucked to the carpet where as the new Power Nozzles are vented (those little slots that allow air to flow in front of the brush roll).

Another equivalent worth considering might be one of those Perfect metal canisters that are a pretty faithful re-creation of the Electrolux metal canisters from the '70s and early '80s, assuming you're looking for the whole vacuum cleaner and not just the power nozzle.

PN5 was replaced by the PN6, PN7, etc. I believe that is the one with the removable cord, similar in concept to the much older power nozzles. I think the Perfect power nozzle is setup the same way.

The perfect has the same style bottom plate as a PN 5, after the PN 6 they had a different style bottom.

The PN-5 was the first of Electrolux's L-shaped power nozzles. The previous ones--PN-1, PN-2, PN-4 (why wasn't there a PN-3?)--were all symmetrical. Personally, I'm not a big fan of that little 'outrigger' on the right-hand side. I don't know if maybe it's because I'm left-handed, but I always seem to be getting that thing caught on chair legs and such. Of course, my latest acquisition is a Discovery upright that basically has a PN-5 for a foot, so go figure...

I'm pretty sure the PN 3 was for the heavy duty upright, that brush roll was very similar to a pn4 but just different enough, so my guess would be that was the unbranded PN 3

I've never seen a pre-1984-style Perfect PowerTeam brand vacuum cleaner (models 1205, 1401, 1401-B, & 1505), but I have seen the Model 1521-style (Diamond J, Marquise, Grand Marquise, Legacy, Ultralux, Ultralux LX, and Ultralux Classic) which was made from 1984-1993.

The main differences between the Model 1521 and its rectangular-shaped predecessors were: the motors, the handle design, the on/off buttons, and the Automatic Control panel (interestingly, though, the "Automatic Control" script lettering was the same on all Electrolux cylinder models from 1968-1993).

I think there have been two Perfect brand cylinder models: C101 and C103. The C101 is similar to the Electrolux brand Model 1521s, and the C103 resembles the Aerus brand Model C151M, Lux Classic.

Let me know if I'm missing something.

Aerus LLC is what used to be called Electrolux Corporation (USA), the company that manufactured your cylinder with the PN5 power nozzle (check the inside cover of the bag chamber for the model of the cylinder). It started out as a subsidiary of AB Electrolux in 1924, but became disaffiliated from it about 50 years ago. The Aerus name was launched when the Electrolux registered trademark was sold back to AB Electrolux about 20 years ago. The agreement allows it to use "Lux" in its product naming.

Its current line-up of cylinder vacuum cleaners are: Model C151M, Lux Classic--power nozzle N115Z; Model C153, Lux Legacy--power nozzle N137Z; and Model C177A, Lux Guardian Platinum--power nozzle N137Z. AB Electrolux of Sweden--through its North American branch, Electrolux North America, Inc.-- manufactures the Electrolux and Eureka appliances (among others)--found in big box stores. Its products are totally different than Aerus's.

The Perfect PowerTeam brand is produced by Perfect Products, Inc. of Farmington, NY. The company began selling vacuum cleaners around 2003. They resemble some AB Electrolux (e. g. Sanitaire) and Aerus (e.g. Lux Classic) vacuum cleaners, but the companies are not related. As mentioned above, its cylinders would be another replacement option for you. I don't think the company has retail stores but distributes through multi-brand vacuum cleaner stores.

John Anderson (tig21er), who has sold Electrolux/Aerus products for over 50 years, mentioned in another thread some time ago that the PN-3 was the 3-wire version of the PN-2--made for the Model CB.

If anyone has a teal Model CB with its original power nozzle from the 1970s please check to see if it's a Model PN-3 and post a photo of its base plate. I would take for granted that it would resemble the PN-2 with its polished aluminum hood and jade elbow (the color changed to ivory when it was paired with the Super J).

I'm left handed and have no problem with the power head not getting caught on table legs, etc. I find it very easy to maneuver.

Good to know about the PN-3. I wondered why they didn't called the CB that used the pn4 a pn5 and the ones that used a pn5 a pn6 and so on, because they all had three wires. Guess we'll never know the thought process

Here are the other Electrolux Corp. 3-wire power nozzle model designations--at least the ones I have seen:

I wonder if the 3-wire version of the PN-1 was PN-1C?

Yes there was a three wire PN1, it was for commercial use and had a regular grounded cord on it that plugged into the wall.

And Yes there was a PN3, the same as a PN2 but had a third prong in the connector for the ground wire. Some of the PN2 just had two pins, some had two plus the plastic pin in the center.

I have a brown PN-4C (3-wire) that I would be willing to trade. It appears to be in good shape, but I haven't been able to run it.

As others have stated, if you're JUST looking for a power nozzle, and you want something brand new, the Aerus <a name="start_31555.348990"></a>power nozzle N115Z is the modern day equivalent of the PN5.



 


If you're in need of the entire vacuum, then ask for the Aerus Lux Classic. Unlike the rest of the Aerus lineup, the Classic is still naturally compatible with all original "steel wand" Electrolux attachments (the others take an adapter). The Lux Legacy is one step higher; the biggest difference is on-board tool storage, plastic wands, a lighted power nozzle, and sidekick mini power nozzle. The Lux Guardian Platinum is the top-tier model. It has all the bells and whistles and, unlike the Legacy and Classic, has little in common with the original Electrolux machines, save for its plastic wands (which are similar to but not compatible with the Epic/Legacy and Renaissance wands) and its sidekick tool.


 


I would like to persuade you against the Perfect brand. People rave about how it's like buying a brand new vintage Electrolux with a more powerful motor, whatever, whatever. The fact is that those machines are a complete and total fake. They steal sales away from Aerus (which is the present-day name for Electrolux USA), and I'm not ok with that. I wouldn't buy some Chinese knock-off Mercedes just because it looks like a Mercedes, and by similar logic, I want nothing to do with Perfect machines. They are crooks!
