Late 1990's Royal Metal Upright Vacuums

I have a question about Royal Metal uprights from the 1990's. I know that sometime after the mid 1990's, Royal changed the motor from having the carbon brush holders accessable from outside the vacuum, to being internal, & also eliminated the oiling port. The motor they changed to I would assume has a ball bearing & would have to take the cover off to change carbon brushes, IF that can be done. Now, what I wonder is, how durable are these new-style motors?? Reason that I ask is I am looking at purchasing a Royal from the late 1990's with this new-style motor. However, This particular Royal is Made in the USA, it's NOT a Chinese-made Royal. My only hesitation is that our local vac shop got one of these Royals with the new-style motor in with a dead motor about a year before he went out of business, & this one was completely destroyed, NO WAY the motor could have been repaired.

So....do I have reason to be concerned & hold out for finding a Royal with the oiling port?? Or are these Royals with the newer-style motor that are American made just as durable? I would rather find out BEFORE I give this guy $200 for his vacuum.

I believe the Royals made in the 1990's up to about 2005 or so are the best made Royals there are. I have not heard of any problems with the "Drop In" motors.

I believe the Royals made in the 1990's up to about 2005 or so are the best made Royals there are. I have not heard of any problems with the "Drop In" motors. Since you do not know the circumstances of why that motor burned up, I wouldn't worry too much about it. It may hav been submerged in water or been in a fire or just badly abused, who knows what?

My favorite metal Royal uprights were those made between 1980 and 1995.

I start at 1980 as that was the year of the 4.5 amp motor; the 18" wide model 618 (620 similar but with headlight) with its 6 amp motor made its debut in 1984; the new-style angled fan case was used on all other Royals starting in 1985, along with the 5.4 amp motor. Starting in 1987, the 6 amp motor found a home on consumer uprights.
