Hey everyone, I have been wondering about this for awhile, is there really a difference between a plastic fan and a metal fan on a modern Kirby?

Thread Number: 8640

I'm not a 100% sure, but I think the plastic fans are lighter and put less strain on the motor allowing it to go faster or something along those lines.

The plastic fans used in G6 Kirbys and beyond have tapered blades-the metal fans do not have tapered blades-the tapered blades-trailing end lower than leading end of the blade-were supposed to improve efficiency and less drag on the motor according to the NASA engineers that came up with the tapered blade fan.Now you see tapered bladed fans in other vacuums-Meile for example. And tapered fancase to match-come to think of it my Tornado Wet-Dry vac has a tapered fan and fancase-external filter bag goes on the exhaust of the fan housing. The Tornado fan is metal.Same with Meile. The tapered fans are also found in engine turbochargers.Caterpillar deisels have them.A generator at my workplace has two of them and HUGE!!

I've noticed some difference between the two fan setups but not enough to really fuss about. The metal fans have a distinct sound though which is quite nice.

In certain applications, metal fans can be a big advantage. Every time I would get a "diner machine" at Oreck, I'd switch out the metaxalloy (plastic) fan for a metal one. The grease which caked up inside the fan housing literally turned the plastic fan into a spinning disk. The XL-21 line uses a tapered fan, where as the classic series does not. It will interesting to see if the new Kirby (Avalier?) will have a different fan design. If it incorporates too much plastic, it will probably the end of Kirby anyhow.

I agree, I am still very afraid that Kirby will go the way of Hoover, Royal and Eureka.

Or worse, the way of Air-Way, Lewet, and Apex

Oh no, I don't even wanna think of that scenario

Have no Fear, kids.

"I am still very afraid that Kirby will go the way of Hoover, Royal and Eureka."

"Or worse, the way of Air-Way, Lewet, and Apex"

At least Air-Way, Lewyt and Apex don't have to suffer the indignity of having their logos plastered all over available contemporary 'vacuums' that their retired engineers and assemblers would be embarrassed to have represent these formerly esteemed manufacturers.

Hoover and Royal logos are left twisting in the wind, proclaiming to the the masses that TTI vacuums are a natural offshoot of genuine Hoover/Royal DNA. How insulting. I wince every time I pass the Hoover logo slapped on a cheap plastic vacuum with a nonetheless inflated price.

Eureka is still the same family run company (Yes, Eureka is part of the Electrolux family of home care products since 2003) and even though they have evolved and adapted to the times, they still make a quality vacuum that gives reliable service.

However, I have no fear that Kirby is heading anywhere near the TTI Road of Falsehood and Deceit - they would simply close their doors and retire the Brandname. But, there will always be a steady market for high-end products for high-end consumers with taste and appreciation for the better things in life. Trailertrash do not buy Kirbys - they inherite them and run 'em into the ground, then toss 'em to the curb where guys like me pass by and plunk 'em in the trunk. I have 11 different Kirby models and every one was free for the picking-up.

I agree with Dave.......

Say Kirby does close there doors and the last model they produce is a bust, just like Lewet, Air-Way and Shetland, yeah there a very good and proud company, but its not like we will never see another Kirby again. Again just like Lewet and Air-Way there are too many still in circulation to dye out completely.
Vac shops will always have one in stock. Daves right don't worry.
