Kirby Spray Guns Over the Years

Does anyone know why the current version (as of the Generation 3) of the Kirby spray gun has no gasket for the jar?

The previous design, issued between models 561 and Legend II, did have a jar gasket which was mounted on the outside of the jar while off of the gun. The last part number for the jar gasket was 250886.

I have no inside information into the minds at Kirby but one of the general tenets of product design over time is to reduce the number of parts from one version to the next in order to increase manufacturing efficiency and reduce cost. No doubt the most recent version is designed to form a reasonably tight seal without a gasket. From the manufacturers' perspective, the seal doesn't have to be perfect since the sprayer is always used in an upright position and storing liquids in the bottle is a non-issue since the instructions specify emptying and rinsing the sprayer after each use. In short, the gasket-less design may not be perfect, but in Kirby's eyes, it's good enough.
