I have the opportunity to buy the pictured Kirby Sanitronic. I have 2 questions.

1- What is the approximate age of this?

2- The owner said "make an offer". What is reasonable to pay for this?

Thanks!

Mid 60s. That looks like a Kirby Sanitronic VII with original cord.

Its worth what the seller is willing to part for, and what your willing to pay. I have seen many kirby sanitronics locally for sale anywhere between $10 and $75. That one looks decent, and possibly original.

Id say start with about $40-50 and go from there. :)

i only say..

$20 because the metal is becoming a little oxidized and it will need a good cleaning (if you choose of course) and the box has a huge chunk out of it lol (:

well...

I have offered $20... Lets see what is said. As far as cleaning the metal up... what is the best to use? Chrome polish?

I'd offer $35.00. I just got the same vacuum back today from being machine buffed. I was fortunate enough to have a NOS Kirby replacement bag for it, added a new cord and wheels, all genuine Kirby. I already had a restored Dual 50, but this was a one owner, always maintained, motor runs smooth as silk, so I went ahead and invested a little money and have a really nice machine. I would've used Mother's on it, but had some scratches on the head and they came out with the buffer. It it runs well, and doesn't have any bad smells...lol...I'd go up to $50.00 if I really wanted it. Just my .02 worth.

Thanks for the suggestions of using mothers for the aluminum. Another cleaning question, although not directly relating to this vacuum, is what would be the best way to clean plastic parts on vacuums, when they have dirt that simply will not come off of it?

Well, he was not too hapy with the $20 offer. He claimed that he had to replace the brush attachment and that cost more that the $20. I asked him what he felt was reasonable and he told me he would have to call Kriby dealer and see what the vac was worth. I told him thanks anyway. Oh well :)

<span style="font-family: trebuchet ms,geneva; font-size: medium;">Well, a talk with the Kirby dealer could go either way.</span>

<span style="font-family: trebuchet ms,geneva; font-size: medium;">He could say, "Oh, those old machines aren't any good. They belch dust and smell, and don't clean very well. Here ... let me show you our newest model, the Sentria......."</span>

<span style="font-family: trebuchet ms,geneva; font-size: medium;">Or, if he has a soft spot for old Kirbys, and a few of them do, he might offer to buy it himself.</span>

<span style="font-family: trebuchet ms,geneva; font-size: medium;">Had it been me, and this was a machine I really wanted, I would probably would have offered $50.00 and would have probably been willing to go a bit higher if he balked. It's in nice shape and all original. Making it shiny will take a bit of elbow grease but it won't be too hard to do.</span>

Looks to be nice and complete... I bet it would clean up nicely.  If that's the original cord on the cleaner, I think those white cords with the gold plug-ends are somewhat rare.

<span style="font-family: trebuchet ms,geneva; font-size: medium;">Yes -- the white cord is quite rare. It was made only for that one model so it's even rarer than the gray cord with the red tips which was used for six models over a span of six years (516~561).

@ electrolux~137

Perhaps but now that I just got 9 Kirbys today at a phenominal price I think I will pass :)Those should keep me busy for awhile!

I just recently, on eBay, came across a Kirby Sanitronic VII with an instruction manual written down by the salesman as being delivered on October 1, 1962. Can't give you the link to it now, but I can tell you that the 562 Sanitronic was much short-lived because of this discovery.

That is a Sanitronic (Model 562) that was manufactured in 1962.  The Sanitronic VII was the 1963 model.  Charles is correct in noting that the white cord is unique to that model only.  They are rare as hen's teeth!  That model also introduced the pocket in the bag with a scraper on the end for scraping debris into the Em-Tor.  Another unique thing about that model is that some of the trim is a coppertone color.  After that, Kirby switched to a more plain tan color.  If you can get it for $50, I'd say you've got a bargain!

Here's a photo of the two different handle grips.  On the left is the 562 (Sanitronic) with its coppertone grip.  On the right is the Sanitronic VII with is tan grip.  If the one you're looking at still has its original coppertone trim, then you'll have a REALLY nice machine!

Here are my two 1-speed Sanitronics.  Unfortunately, I don't have an original bag for the 562.  My 562 also has the replacement tan nozzle bumper and headlight trim.  I think the original bumper and headlight trim would have also been a coppertone color, since the bag guard, bag top, and handle grip were.

<span style="font-family: verdana, geneva;">My parents owned a Kirby Sanitronic VII when I was growing up, and I thought my aunt had a red Hoover that looked somewhat similar to it.  Can anyone provide possibilities of the vacuum cleaner she had?</span>

"Red Hoover"

<span style="font-family: trebuchet ms,geneva;">Regarding the question I raised in my last post I somehow had it in my mind that my aunt's vacuum cleaner was a Hoover but have since found out that it was a Kirby--likely a 515 or 516.  </span>
