Kirby hedge trimmer

Hey
I was on eBay and found a Kirby hedge trimmer connected to a flex shaft.
I've never seen this. It looks legit. They raked rugs shaved beards massaged backs jigsaws etc. I just wondered any info on them. I hate hedge trimmer. I have vines for ground covering and like to use weed whacker basically because I hate grasshoppers and love to cut em up. It's very therapeutic.

Can't imagine anything more dangerous than that. No hand guards and no switch release when you put it down.

Nothing dangerous about it. Just need common sense around tools. Don't stick your fingers on the pointy things. And trimmers without a trigger lock are just so taxing on your hand muscles and you end up with blisters.

I have 1950's Craftsman hedge shears I got at Goodwill for $10 and I love them to death! Has a huge handle on the side to grab them with for cutting at an angle and all you have to do is slough oil on them and they will cut a whole hedge down to size in just a few minutes. All steel housing with a 2 prong non polarized cord. Never been harmed by them. I choose them over any plastic trimmers as the modern electric trimmers vibrate your arms off your body.

I heard that Kirby made hedge shears but I never seen any evidence of them anywhere, I thought it was just someone being funny. This is truly amazing to see and it's too bad they are priced so high. I cannot imagine how ridiculous you would look to your neighbors with that contraption!

The Kirby hedge shears looks like the ones you could attach to your drill.In those days there were all kinds of attachments for drills!Yes,in the days these machines were made folks and kids had the common sense to keep fingers away from the blades!

Clever but wholly impractical...

I love Kirbys and I think their concept of maximizing the value proposition of their expensive machines by adding all kinds of crazy 'functionality' to them is both fascinating and sometimes amusing as they manage to turn a fairly straightforward household appliance into a real life 'Rube Goldberg' device.

This hedge trimmer accessory is certainly clever but it's also wholly impractical. I mean, who in their right mind would want to lug a heavy, expensive vacuum cleaner around their muddy yard to trim their hedges? Not only is it physically ungainly but it's a potential shock hazard as well. I think there's a very good reason this accessory is an extreme rarity.

I can't see anything clever in this attachment...why not an attachment you could put on your skillsaw to clean your house ?

this isnt a legitimate kirby attachment, they never made such a thing. some idiot who thinks a drill operated hedge trimmer went with a handi butler flexible cable.

Really? Damn, you are right. I just looked it up. I guess in the 1970's someone was using this with their Kirby.

Yep, LOTS of drill attachments back then.
I have a string trimmer attachment that fits on a drill but it would never spin fast enough to do a good, er decent, uh ok job... 2000 RPM will not cut it, pun intended.
I also have a drill powered water pump that never worked right.

I have a Black and Decker circular saw that I seen in an old LIFE magazine ad that actually had a chainsaw attachment for it that hooked onto where the sawblade goes (and you left the sawblade on by the way to keep the chainsaw part steady) so you could trim trees with it. It was unbelievable.

Yup, as others have already pointed out

. . .Not a Kirby attachment.  But I did used to joke that they would come out with the Kirby Roto-tiller attachments sometime soon, so wouldn't doubt it.
