Kirby G series issues

Has anyone else had any reliability issues out of G series sweepers, or did I just get some bad luck? I've had a few G series and they seem to have had more problems than older models.

I have an all original 1993 Kirby G3 that I've had for 4 years now. It still runs like new and the transmission is smoother than the one in my 2012 Sentria. I've never had to replace anything except belt and brushroll.

No problems at all with any of my three G's, at least nothing that couldn't be attributed to normal wear and tear and which was also easily repairable. That said, it would be fairly logical to see the G-series and newer machines as potentially more failure prone since they're more complex (i.e., more that can go wrong) than their predecessors.

It must just be my luck right now then, actually with most kirbys I'm running into right now. I had a g5 that I had picked up for an aunt of mine. Motor sounded good and strong. Put a brand new belt on it. But as soon as the head just touches the carpet, it completely stops spinning. There no belt sliping either. It just like grabs hold of the carpet and locks it up. Actually I'm having some more potential problems with my older kirbys tonight as well. I just bought a kirby classic omega. Cleaned the bag out, new belt, etc. But when it's running, it sounds like metalic sheering? Maybe sheering isn't the best description, but I havn't heard a kirby sound like this before. And I know it's a metal fan, so I could be uneducated and it could be the metal fan ones are supposed to sound metallic. But I also have a Sanitronic series one and it doesn't have that metallic sound. I'm starting to get really frustrated lol

take the omega apart and look at the fan blade. depending on what the blade looks like, will likely answer your question about it

take the g5 completely apart too as more is going on then you are describing - so I bet once apart you will see there are some other obvious issues going on. There are only a handful of screws holding everything together. Do not take apart the handle pivot spring, leave it in its carriage as it takes special tools to re-align it. Nothing else inside the vac takes any special tool.

Thank you for your assistance. I don't have the g5 anymore, but the omega I do. I will try and work on that here in the near future and I'll let you know how it goes.

I would have been curious to know what was causing that brush to stop so abruptly. Perhaps a belt pulley shaft not tightened down properly?? I'm at a loss on that one. Do you remember if the belt had a smooth inside, or a knurled? The smoother inside is made for the "Gen 2" types, aka Heritage, Classic, etc. The knurled ones are for the G Series and up. Any experts here have an idea?

It was the knurled belt. I took one that was working on my sentria and put it on there just because I didn't know what else to try lol. I've asked everyone I know about it and no one seems to have had an answer

Well, when you said you put a new belt on, everyone including myself thought you were using the correct belt. A knurled belt. ALL G  series Kirby's use the Knurled belt.

I never had any problems with my kirbys as I use only a few per day, as with belts, bags, and brushbars they have never been a bother in some cases. I usually part off the kirby's with bad fans/motors and use them for myt collection
