So those who know me know I have a distinct disliking of G and Sentria Kirbys. I prefer the older versions but that said I got my hands on a g5 with all its attachments the other day for $ 45.00. Plan was to fully rebuild it and sell it in our rebuilt section at my shop.

I stripped it down , The machine was a bit dirty inside and the brush roll was finished. I ordered a new one from Kirby in Kuilsriver they delivered it the same day to my shop but I could not get the exact one for the G5 due to its brush light been situated on the wrong side of the cleaner head. Any how I made do and was happy with the new one.

All put together , The pics dont do the shine justice.

After reasembly I started to think i may keep it. I like the colour scheme and it works very well. I prefer it over my Sentria I bought new when they launched it ( the handle doesnt flex like the sentria's do under load )

I used it to do my normal evening cleanup after the kids and animals, I must say it worked well but it took me 3 times as long to do the job with the Kirby compared to my dyson. The dyson defiantly beats it hands down for user friendliness and convenience. My home has Carpet, Tile , marble  and wood finish. It was fun but time consuming to change between the floor types and the hose, Something they dyson does with ease.

It was great fun to use but to impractical to be my daily driver, Not in my house with my boys and animals. That said Its definitely a keeper , the first time I have said that about a G series Kirby

Don't forget how easily the Fantom changes to floors....one button, with an on-board floor tool!

Alex

What are you doing hijacking Gareth's Kirby thread with Fantom?!?! A Hoover Windtunnel or Fantom couldn't even compare to a Kirby's superior cleaning power & quality!

Get your priorities straight there, boy....you may have to convert a Kirby to use tools instead of the convenience of a Fantom with it's cleaning wand, but otherwise a Kirby is superior to a Fantom in every way. :P

Alex is the Thread saboteur, that dread vandal of the EVIL DIE...DIE...DIESON!  The DESTROYER of expensively high-priced cheap plastic garbage. He exists solely to bring greater glory to THE KIRBY'S unrivaled superiority...matchless in its functionality and exquisite quality. Thank you Alex for your dedication in truth, justice and the KIRBY WAY...I salute you!

AT EASE...AT EASE you say! We must fix bayonets and proceed at the double-quick and take the height's! Send us in where the fire is the hottest, and we shall prevail against those blue devil Dysons. We shall give no quarter to the enemy...Nothing but the black flag, No Prisoners!

I am a huge dyson fan, I sell them in my shop, I have about 40 in my collection, I love them and think they are great. I use two at home to keep my home spotless a Dc51 and a dc52 cinetic.  I am a firm believer in them. In a busy household like mine with two sons, a working mom and dad animals and the works a Kirby is to impractical to use to keep the house clean. The dyson can do what the Kirby does in a quarter of the time.  Just out of interest I opened up the Kirby bag after cleaning my home and was pleasantly surprised to see no more dirt in it than the dyson normally pics up every day. Vacuuming every day and not the vacuum you use is the best way to keep deep down dirt out of the carpet.

Every person is welcome to their own opinion and can like what ever machine they like I like dysons .

That out of the way This thread I created is about my New g5 and how much I am enjoying using it. It reminds me of a 1950 Cadillac or Buick, Big , powerful and fun to use on weekends but way to impractical to use every day for the school run and driving to the office in traffic that's my opinion.

I must whole-heartedly agree, Kirby is just like the chrome of the fifty's...spectacular!  Congratulations on your fantastic G5, it will never fail you.

Gareth,

You should be able to find a new Tech Drive assy. on ebay or at Goodvac.com. There is only one style of Tech Drive, it fits all G series Kirby's and it is easy to replace. You may have to change the foot pedal so the color matches that of the G5. The G5 color scheme is my favorite.

OK. That sounds like a good plan. I forgot you owned your own shop anmd probably had parts too.

Good Luck with the Tech Drive!

Big and beautiful is right, now to find you the matching car!

Even I find the G series cumbersome, what do you think of your 500 series model? I don't tend to buy Kirbys after the Legend II, from there it gets bulky!

Trust me, the Kirby does the job with better style! Would you rather stare at spinning dirt and bending plastic, or a lovely bag and shining chrome? I'd LOVE to see you try to shampoo carpets, polish dinnerware, wax floors and etc with the Dyson!

Remember! No other machine does more for you than KIRBY!

Well, if Kirby has the panache, it has the panache. By Jove, I think I've got it...KIRBY is the insurmountable king of panache...INVINCIBLE!

Some years back I think it was Trebor who said that vacuuming with a vacuum like a Kirby takes planing, This is true, I am giving it a go. It is taking some planing to do a daily clean. I have to do it before everyone gets home though. I first vacuuming with the hose I to do the  in - between's and hard floors, Then I do the rugs. It still takes much longer but I have got the time down.

I must say for a dirty air vacuum the hose suction is very good. I don't like the floor tool to much, On the wooden floors it works well but it catches on the tiles in grouting grooves scratching alot.

Excellent, soon you will discover the path of enlightenment! Kirby is an art form, and as any art form it must be mastered. If you continue your training, I do believe you have the makings of a Kung Fu/Kirby genius.

I don't like Kirbys floor tool at all-just go to a vacuum store-buy a hair bare floor tool-MUCH better! and worth it.Too bad Kirby doesn't throw one of those in-the "floor" tool they provide is really a carpet surface tool.It is HORRIBLE to use on hard floors.

Should have said a bare floor tool with the horsehair bristles.A generic one at a vac store.Have a few of those-they work good with the Kirby or other 1.25" vacuum wands.Leave the Kirby one in the kit!A floor tool with the "castle" cut front bristles works the best--no plowing of debris.

Yes I have a few of them, I have always found the Kirby floor tools odd to be honest. ( talking about the from the tradition style ones onwards, not sure of they came on earlier models )
