Kirby F&G Setup

A friend of mine sent this to me and it just arrived today. I've seen these on Ebay, but I think his wife made this one. He was nice enough even to include a brand new package of bags! There is a noticeable difference in how the vacuum handles too. With the F&G setup, there's less tendency for the nozzle to lift off when pulling the vacuum back.

I know vintage purists will consign me to vacuum hell for using this setup! LOL! But the inner nerd demanded that I give it a whirl.

I also ran a test to compare the new four row brush row on my 516 with the old two row horse hair brush roll on my 515. The new four row with synthetic bristles won that test hands down! I vacuumed first with the 515 first and emptied the contents of the bag. Then I ran the 516 over the same area. What was surprising is the amount of dog hair it got up that was left by the 515. Even more impressive was the additional grit it got out of the carpet.

Usually I don't care for after-market paper bag assemblies on the 500 series - but that is nice!

my ds80 has the same setup I do miss the handi emptor only for the look but other than that it works flawlessly.

My Kirby dealer is always adamant that the older Kirby's are not powerful enough to effectively push the dirt up the F&G tube. Based on the feedback here, it sounds like that is incorrect.

That Kirby dealer is way wrong!They have the power to work this way. But they DO look better with the Sani Emptor as well as clean better since the airflow is less impeded,
but using the four row brush should compensate for that!

Instead of using the F&G bags I usually take a cheap type A Hoover bag and cut off the bottom and tape the hole shut. It seems to work better than the F&G bags because the dirt is not going through the fill tube it is just going straight into the bag.

But I usually sake the bag out after every use.

One more thing....

Some of the F&G bag assemblies are not large enough to let the F&G bag inflate fully. Just something I have noticed.

I have a DVC F&G bag for Kirbys-tried it-but like the orig Kirby bags better.The DVC bag chokes off the Kirbys airflow-and don't like the PLASTIC connector on the DVC bag.My DVC F&G bag came with a box of Kirby parts I got from the Vacuum Cleaner Hospital when they closed.
