..or so the plate says on the bottom. I have enough projects. Really. But I spied the handle sticking up like it was waving a red flag with the garbage truck 2 houses behind it. 1950's?

What.
Have.
I.
Done?

Be warned, it's filthy, it does power up though.

Danyele,

The Dual Sanitronic 50, being produced from 1965-67, was the last Kirby to use the kind of handle assembly you describe, which goes back to the 516. The D50 was also the first Kirby to have the two-speed motor, which when the hose is attached, will run at a much higher speed.

The Dual Sanitronic 80 was the first Kirby with the new-style handle fork assembly. Here's mine.

Thanks Ben. It's about as old as I am then. LOL

That's a beautiful 80 you have.

Will do a little clean up on this tomorrow hopefully and see what I'm in for.

On your d80 belt lifter isn't that the suds o match. Both my d80s have dual sanitronic 80.
The bag he has isn't that classic omega bag.
Thanks

Les,

It sure does. This is how the D50 looked when it came from the Kirby factory.

On my D80's nozzle, that's just a decal which shows you how to use the belt lifter. I have seen many of these nozzles without it, therefore to protect its value I am keeping that on. If you take the decal off, the nozzle has the large Kirby oval logo on it with stripes going up and down it.

Awesome save!

Since it powers up, you are half way there already! Just needs a complete teardown, cleaning, and polishing. Replace bearings and brushes and it may be set to last a few more decades. These vacs look wonderful when cleaned and polished.
The rich brown trim against gleaming polished aluminum, the one-of-kind lighted logo on the headlight, and the sunburst label in the belt lifter...
Ask away if you have any questions on it!
I am currently restoring my mom's original D50. It is torn down to the last screw and first round of polishing has been done. Gotta get it done before Christmas, as this is my gift to her.

Nice save!!!

I love saving vintage stuff from going into the garbage!!! I saved this mid century Mersman end table from the garbage! He was upside-down and his finish was coming off! I took him apart, sanded him down, stained, and cleared him! He now resides in my bedroom and holds my alarm clocks! Also, saved this Sunbeam Mixmaster from going into the garbage! The garbage truck was half a block away from picking the mixer up! The mixer works great! The only thing wrong with it is the screen print on the speed selector has wore off! I bought it a set of beaters and have made a few cakes with it! I hate the wastefulness!!! People need to quit throwing good stuff away!!! I'm glad you saved that Dual Sanitronic 50!!! I have one too!

Michelle, great save on the mixer, as well as the table! Were you lucky enough to get the bowls as well? I agree, people should at least donate this stuff to give it some kind of chance. Really is disgusting of what is thrown away, only to be replaced by stuff that will be tossed again in just a short time. Say what is that car in the second picture?

Thanks! Yes the mixer came with the bowls! Definitely donate or give stuff away! I hate when good stuff goes into the garbage! Especially vintage stuff! That's my husband's 1977 Chevy Chevette Scooter named Scooty! We saved him from a barn that was in our neighborhood. He sat there for 31 years, destroyed from raccoons! My husband and I restore cars for a living. He cleaned him all up and got his motor unstuck! We take him all over and to local car shows! We have 11 cars!

Hi!!! Thanks!!! So awesome that people remember Sweepy!!!! We have kind of worked on him here and there because I now have a 1958 Plymouth Savoy named Little Red, a 1967 Pontiac Lemans named Mr. Blue, and a 1964 Chevy Impala named Lily! The Impala was my dad's car and he had it since I was 7! So, a lot of my energy and time has gone into the Impala! The Lemans is in our garage now getting him ready to drive for next year! Are you on facebook? I post everything on there!!!
