I am in the process of restoring a Classic III that I bought at a yard sale. I discovered that the fan was broken, so I decided to polish and rebuild it while i had it apart.

I went and made a bonehead move and did not draw a wiring diagram or take a photo of the speed switch. I would be very grateful if someone could share some knowledge with me and tell me where the wires go.

I actually made 2 mistakes, because i did not mark the location of the belt hook when I took the belt lifter apart. This is my very first restore, so i have made a few rookie mistakes. Thanks in advance.

Justin,

I too would like to come across an actual Kirby service manual intended specifically for repair of the Classic III (from 1977, 1978 or 1979). For now, you could use the Heritage II version of the wiring diagrams.

Yes -- just as Joel noted, if you look carefully at the switch, the colors are marked with R, G, Y, and W.  They can be hard to see, but they are there.  The other thing I would encourage you to do is to make certain you reseal the fan case with a clear silicone.

You guys are great! Thank you. I can't believe those letters were there the whole time. I used black silicone to seal the case, it was what I had. I hope there will be no ill effects. I will post some photos when done. Thanks again!
