When i bought my D-50, it had a spare belt. A few weeks later, i took it apart to find that the original belt was completely thrashed. I put on the new one, which is about 3 inches in radius, and i wasnt strong enough to lift it back onto the belt lifter or ffan, and it was very hard to twist the belt lifter. So heres my question: Are you supposed to stretch the new belts before you put them on? If so, how would you do it?

You shouldn't have to do that. It sounds like you may not be following the correct procedure for using the belt lifter. If you look in the "Manuals" section of this site, you'll find a scanned copy of the Classic III manual. Follow that procedure. It's basically the same for the D50. If you're still having problems, post again on this thread. Hope this helps!
First of all: Im postitive that i was using the belt lifter correctly. I was turning it counter clockwise to remove the belt and clockwise to put the belt on.
Second of all: I actually own a classic III. I dont like to use it because there is a bad part on the bag.

I've had that happen.
I put a new one on my Classic III when I replaced the brushroll and it seemed excessively tight. It took a little effort to turn the belt lifter. This may be because it's brand new. After some use, it usually loosens up and the lifter is easier to turn.
Come to think of it, every Kirby I've owned has been this way. The D-50, Classic III, Heritage II and Gen. 3. I use genuine belts.
I don't think you're doing it wrong.

Is the belt included with your vintage kirby "vintage" too?if it is the belt has dried and stiffened with age.You will need a new replacement.

It sounds like you may be using a G series knurled belt. They are stiffer, so it does require a little more brawn!

The belt is probably old and dried out. I put a new belt on my Legend II it was one of the original belts that I bought with the machine (couldn't find my new Kirby belts) and when I turned the belt lifter around with the old belt on it I broke the belt lifter. I had to get a new belt lifter. Boy did I learn a lesson on that one. I now only buy a couple of belts at a time not a bunch like I used too.
