Howdy! I bought a Kirby 515 a few weeks ago and have been enjoying it a lot. I was just looking on eBay and someone has one for sale with pictures. I was surprised to see a metal box that mine does not have. It is a box that the bag attaches to, and then the box attaches to the nozzle on the right side of the head.

My unit has no "metal box." The bag attaches directly to the nozzle on the right side of the head.

My vacuum works great like I said, but am I missing a part, or is the other one something extra?

The "metal Box" is the Sani-Emptor-orig Kirbys of that time had that.It was used to help in dumping the bag.It has a trap door on the bottom you open to empty the bag.You shake down the bag with the door closed and the machine off.You put papers on the floor under the machine and open the door under the "box" thus emptying the dirt onto the papers-or you can remove the bag and box and empty them into a trash can-as I do.Forget the paper gag.
The bag on your machine must be a DVC retrofit bag-the one I have uses paper F&G bags. The orig bag will improve the performance.

Question, I notice this particular 515 has the screw for the "Sweet Aire" on the top of the Sani-Emtor. Was this the first model to have this? It's the first one I've seen with this feature and yet the early-500 style fancase/em-tor assembly. The big change would come the following year in 1956 with the 516. Personally, I like the styling of the early 500's better.

Todays History lesson. The Sani- Em-Tor

This was the exclusive design of James B. Kirby. That and his Toe-Touch-Control were the only features he didn't share with other compnies.
The Sain-Em-Tor goes back to 1931.

I have done extensive research on Kirby machines and here is the patent info for a hand vac of his.

Date patented Sept. 8, 1936. Patent holder J. B. Kirby. Patent number 2,053,563. type of device. Pnumatic vacuum cleaner.
Date Filed Jan. 29, 1931

Personally I like the Sani-Em-tor and wish Kirby gave us the option to use it, or the paper bag syseem as they did with the Tradition oan Heritage models.

So ends another history lesson.

Thank you Charles, Bill, and Alex. That would explain why my 505 and 508 don't have that feature. I don't think my 514 has it, I'll have to go and check. With so many "FrankenKirby's" out there, it's hard to know what models originally had what features. Even 20-25 years ago, when my father and I DID occasionally find one in the garbage, it would be a late 500 series (560/561, etc.) I shudder to think how many Sani-Emtors were discarded of or lost because of bojack replacements which take the F & G bag setup.

Alex is loosing his mind

After careful research of James B. Kirby and the introduction of the Sani-Em-Tor, I gave you the patent info on his hand vac, but forgot to add that this was the first use of the Sani-Em-Tor!

As I said a few weeks ago, after you hit 59, the mind starts to go.

Alex.

Sani-EmTor & hand vac invention(s)...

Alex (& all),

The Em-Tor was actually Patent applied for on July 11th, 1930 & thus Patented in 1934; it was designed & invented prior to that & was thus incorporated into use on the Scott Fetzer Sanitation System upright.

As for the hand vac, I believe you are correct Alex, in that this was the first "Kirby" hand vac to carry the Kirby name.

However, one of James B Kirby's first hand vacuums was actually Patent applied for June 11th, 1910 & thus Patented in 1915.

I hope this helps clarify for all.

Re Sani-Em -Tor

Hi Bill:

I have done extensive research on Kirby, Electrolux, and Hoover. I have patent info on each of these brands and when I saw the comment about the metal box under the Kirby bag I knew instanly what it was. Going through my book of Kirby patents was the one mentioned in my post. I do not have the patent for July, 11, 1930 and would love to see it. As for the hand vac's of 1910 and so on, I would love to see those too.

Thanks for the info.

Hey Guys!

While we're talking about Sani-Emptors.....

does anyone have a complete bag assembly for the Heritage (Orange) model? I have a complete machine minus the painted grey Sani-Emptor complete, fill tube assembly complete, and outer bag and topper. Does anyone have one for sale?

Concept prior to the ...Em-Tor

I forgot to mention, as we were discussing the "Em-Tor specifically" as we now know it...

...however, the basic (original) concept of it's later descendant ("the Em-Tor") was Patent applied for on January 20th, 1915 & thus Patented in 1922, Patent #: 001422105; designed & invented prior to that date.

One other 'tid-bit', the "concept" was not "exclusive" to Scott-Fetzer (Kirby) [[sorry Alex]]; he also designed a "similar system" for dirt emptying where the Patent was assigned to Industrial Improvements Incorporated.

Patent applied for on November 12th, 1930 & thus Patented in 1934, Patent #: 001949052; again it was designed & invented prior to that date.

OK, I will shut-up NOW, --LOL

Yes, there was a line of Scott & Fetzer machines called the Keystone, that were sold in retail stores rather than door-to-door. There were two or three models that corresponded to the concurrent Scott & Fetzer models. The top-of-the-line model under both names had a Sani-Emptor.

I have a Scott & Fetzer Sanitation System with the Sani-Emptor. On the bag is "Emptor Model."

Accroding to my Kirby training manual the Sani-Em-Tor was a

As we all know the top brass of any company will say things that are not true. I always thought the Em-Tor was exclusive to Kirby, but the Bison has something like it too.

As for the Keystone, and Scott and Fetzer, Jim Kirby designed these, so that is the same patent #s.

As I said guys, the top Kirby brass gave me this info back in 1976.
