I have been lurking on these pages for some time and really love this site!
I have a question about Kirby 508 Hinge Pins, I have two and one has straight lines on the head and the other has the usual Knurled hash marks. Are these both appropriate to the 508, or is one more correct?
Thanks in advance,
-EW

Thanks,
I also had a question about the different castings on the Nozzle Heads. One of mine (the later logo) doesn't have the raised area on top or the metal clips holding the bumper. It also has a groove where the fastener goes.
Any clues?

The later one, as you describe it, would be for models 513-515, for it was that machine that inaugurated the red nozzle and headlight bumpers, and a new-style rug guard that runs all the way through the nozzle. The earlier one you have is for models 505-512. Specifically, you have a 508 nozzle because of that being the first Kirby with a red belt lifter. The red nozzle bumper on that nozzle is a replacement, since up to the 512, it was gray.

That also means the brush roll assemblies will not interchange between models 505-512 and 513-515. The 513 brush roll will fit all models up to the Dual Sanitronic 80.

Handle Fork Pin

Sorry, I put "hinge" pin in the tiltle when it should have been Handle "Fork" Pin.

Still wondering what the top one goes to?

I don't know for sure, but my guess is that the upper and slightly shorter one is for the early Scott & Fetzer or Vacuette machines. I'll have to take a look at my machines and see which, if any, have the early type. This is something I've never noticed before!

Ah ... A little snooping around and I found a photo of Cb123's 508 with the straight grooves on the fork pin. Whew!

Thanks,

Alex,

That model 3C had been rebuilt by Kirby in the 1956-62 time frame. All the replacement trim I see would've been official Kirby replacement parts in that period (red bumpers for headlight cap and nozzle, Kirby bag with 1953 logo, et al).

You get some serious points, evilw, for pointing out something to Charles that he'd never noticed before--at least with Kirbys and Electroluxes! Anyone that has visited Charles' website and read his threads and replies on Vacuumland knows that is quite a feat! You also get points for being so attentive to details yourself.

Anyway, I also appreciate minutiae such as the handle fork pin knurls, or ridges (which both have--the straight line type is called a "linear knurl", and the criss-cross type is called a "diamond knurl").

All the best in your Kirby restoration efforts.

Thanks everyone ... I love this site! I also LOVE minutia and I guess I am in a "linear knurl" state of mind ..

Do any of you with 505s have the "linear knurl" Fork Pin on your machines?

Thanks again!
