My mom has a Kenmore Whispertone canister vac, hunter green color from 2000. She said she went to change the bag and noticed the pre motor filter was dirty. So she tried to vacuum it off and it just crumbled. The filter has the red plastic frame with foam material on it, which is what disintegrated. Behind it, she said there's another white cloth filter that just sticks behind it. She said she put the white filter back but needs to replace the foam one.

I looked at Sears and didn't see this type. All they have are the square black foam with white material like the Progressives use.

Can this be ordered? If not, I thought about gluing a new material to the old frame and reusing it. I have some of those cut to fit electrostatic A/C vent filters that I've used on other vacuums that might work.

If it is that rough black foam type of filter, people say they have used aquarium filters if you cannot find OEM.

It's usually listed for sale something like "Activated Carbon Foam Pad Filter Aquarium". Just watch for the pore size in the images so you don't suffocate the vacuum.

A lot of the sites are from China, so maybe try a pet store or Walmart or something if you can find one there to cut to fit.

You might not need to glue the new foam to the frame. But most importantly - don't throw away that filter frame! You can easily find universal foam filter sheets on ebay for cheap, cut to size, and stuff it into the old frame.

I don't think you need the fish tank charcoal type. I'd imagine the charcoal dust would dust up the motor. They seem to sell a lot of foam filter material for small engine filters. Just search for:
universal foam filter sheet -carbon

And find something that looks about the same porosity as the original, in huskyvacs' pic, it'd probably be 'S.'

Yes, "S" looks about like the material that it had, except it was really thin compared to that. My Kenmore Progressive's filter material looks more like "L" in the picture, and is thicker, with the white filter material bonded to it, instead of just placed over the back like the Whispertone. I'm thinking the white material is an electrostatic filter. The older Kenmore canisters we had with the same red plastic frame filter, didn't have that white filter on the back.

I did see some of the red filters on eBay, one link the filter appears to actually be just that white material. So I'm thinking maybe cutting a piece of that out may suffice.

There is also a gray frame filter that has more similar to what hers had. But they want between $9 and $12 for these filters. Not worth it, to me, since we have the frame still.

I'm still looking for the same foam filter material

that you are for three Kenmore canisters. From what I've seen there are many but... they are way thicker, 1/4-5/8" . I'm holding mine in front of me and I doubt it is any thicker than 1/16" thick. It's also a very small cell foam. Not rigid at all. I don't know if it would fit back in machine of EVPC 4.5. Going to check at Auto Zone, they apparently have a good selection of foam for motor cycles and for rebuilding fuel filters(overkill) for our use. I will let you know what I find out.
