Kenmore Progressive Glide

I recently decided to buy a new canister and upright vacuum for my mom's house. My Eureka Surfacemax started having many problems and I got tired of having to pay $7 for 3 small bags from Amazon so I threw that away a few weeks ago and planned to just use my Dyson on the hard floors and carpet (even though I dislike the brushroll on it). The Dyson doesn't work that well for cleaning up the dog hair on the hard floors (and there is a lot of dog hair and there are a lot of hard floors) so I ordered a bagged Bissell Zing on Thursday. 


 


Now I'm starting to get tired of the Dyson so I want to buy a new upright for the carpets. I was planning on getting a Panasonic, then I came across the Carpet Pro vacuums and I decided that I wanted one of those. But I found a store return Kenmore Glide on Ebay for $34 today and I was wondering what everyone here thought of those. As you can tell I do change my mind a lot. I saw the Kenmore Glide vacs a couple years ago and liked the look of them. I am a bit confused about the bags. I read that they take type Z bags, but when I searched that on Amazon I only found Miele type Z/Kenmore type U  bags. I found one pack of type Z Kenmore bags but I am a bit concerned about the ability to find bags.

Well....

The Kenmore Glide doesn't seem to be a full sized upright with lack of hose and the fact that is it pretty small. It is one of those smaller vacs to be more compact than any big old upright, but it isn't small enough to qualify as a stick vac. But, I just purchased the Oreck Versavac, and let me tell you for the size its not bag. Its size is similar to the Kenmore but the Oreck also doubles as a steam mop with multiple temperature settings. I have seen a few videos of the Kenmore but it seems to be loud but it was only a video so I could be wrong. The Oreck only had one tiny tiny issue, the dirt cup was a little small (but that doesn't bother me). Also it was a little more expensive but it is worth it believe me.

Well, I would prefer having a bag (one of the main reasons I'm looking to replace my Dyson with a new daily driver) and the Oreck Versavac doesn't really like something that you'd want to use as a daily driver carpet to me. I guess I'll buy the Kenmore Glide, since it is only $36.

I think for $36 you wouldn't be going wrong. I have never used one, but they have the same powerhead as my red Progressive and I can say it's a really nice PN. I don't think they would be too loud and if you need a simple floor vacuum it would be great. Plus you can shut the brushroll off for bare floors, but I think a real floor brush would be better for that.

Yeah, that's what i figured. And the only hard floor I'd use it on are the bathrooms that are upstairs just because it's easier, but I'll keep the Bissell Zing downstairs (unless I'm upstairs with the tools dusting and such) for the majority of the hard floors (I probably won't be using the tool that comes with it, I'll use one of my dedicated hard floor tools, the combination straight suction tools don't work very well for pet hair).

I'm still unsure of what bags it takes. I read that it takes type Z but I didn't find very many of those, and instead I found lots of Kenmore type U/Miele type Z. Does the Glide take bags that only fit that model? Or are there other models that take the same bag? If it is the only one that takes those bags then I'd be worried about the ability to find them. I won't go through bags very often with it upstairs, but it is still something that concerns me.

I bought my Progressive Glide on sale at Sears for $99 and it was probably the best new vacuum that I've purchased. The main vacuum has an awesome amount of suction and the power nozzle is really tough to beat. The bags aren't the biggest, but you can fill them up pretty much to the top, at least I can with mine. Your local Sears SHOULD have bags, but I can't confirm that because I've seen some stores that don't carry them. For the price, I'd definitely go for it, you won't be disappointed.

I don't normally go to Sears, though. I'll go to Walmart tomorrow and see if they have bags there. If they don't then that might be a bit of a deal breaker for me, as I haven't bought it yet and I would like to get bags easily.

I have a Glide and really like it. It was a gift from a fellow collector, Dan Pontow, after we saw it in the Sears store and fell in love with the design and performance. They were new on the scene at the time. If you want the vacuum, it would be worth the trip to Sears and pick up a couple of packages of bags. Walmart or even an independent vac store would not likely have them. I have a Sears Hardware/Appliance store/service center that has them so I don't have to go to the main store. Go for it!
