My dad got me this last minute because I had 200 dollars left to spend. It is really a great vacuum. The suction is really good, it has LED Lights, dirt sensor, and the bristles are INCREDIBLY stiff. No joke, I am very impressed. It has a standard set of tools, and a turbo tool. I am just not fond over the Direct Drive, I would just rather have a belt. But I would strongly recommend it. Very nice cleaner. The only thing is, if you push to hard on the height aduster, it becomes a bit faulty. If the issue does continue, it will get exchanged for a new one, same vacuum though.

PS- the picture was taken at my cousin's house, so that is why the floor and cabinets, ect, are not so nice.

Out of curiosity, Chase, why do you dislike the Direct Drive system?

Well, it doesn't seem like the brushroll is spinning as fast as it should. And once the direct drive goes out, it is very expensive to get it fixed. Don't get me wrong, I do like the no belt, but it would be better with a belt, if that makes sense.

I see what you mean - but when Panasonic used this same setup for their brilliant Icon range, they emphasised the fact that the Direct Drive Agitator was engineered to rotate 60% slower than a belt-drive - this was done deliberately to improve pick-up, and to make the Agitator gentler on the carpet. Stiff bristles going at a high RPM can be quite damaging, and have been known to melt some synthetic carpets!

An agitator with 4 rows of brushes should give you the same number of brush-strokes per revolution as a 2-brush agitator going twice as fast - if that makes sense?

Also, bear in mind that as a belt stretches, it'll slip, and speed will be reduced anyway. You only get 'full' speed for a relatively short time! With Direct Drive, performance is always constant.

I agree that a belt is cheaper to replace than a whole Agitator system, though! Do people really replace belts nowadays? I get the impression many people just replace the whole cleaner!

Yeah that is a good point. I didnt even think of the effect of the hard bristles going at the floor at a rapid speed.

I don't think there's anything wrong with those cabinets or floor!

I've always loved the the Direct Drives... when I sold vacuums at Sears, it was my favorite one. Powerful and quiet. I don't bet the direct drive fails very often. I haven't seen this model yet. What are the attachments like, and where's the power switch? What an interesting curved hose handle!

The squareish design reminds me of the professional vacuums, like a the Kenmore version of those Sebo that came out years ago.

Jack, those Panasonic Icons are interesting... I like the back wheels. The purple one looks like a toy... looks like it was made just for easter! I like that they have adjustable motor speeds.

Hi Bobby - the Icon is one of my favourite modern cleaners! They discontinued them in 2001, but the styling hasn't dated at all.

There were 3 bagged models, and 3 bagless. I have the mid-range and TOL bagged models, and the mid-range bagless.

The great thing about the TOL bagged and bagless was the infra-red dirt sensor. When set to 'auto', they boost the power when they detect heavy soiling, then drop back to normal to save energy:

I sold a couple of those Icons as brand new cleaners about ten years ago, one lilac and white model and one bagless model.

I'm half-wishing that I'd kept them now!

That Kenmore is beautiful...just gorgeous....

Looks like Panasonic has another winner on their hands there.

Would love to see a close up pic of the Direct Drive brush roll on its own removed from the vac. Would love to see how the motor fits inside the roll, and how it plugs into the main powerhead.

BTW...Consumer Reports has for years highly rated the Direct Drive Kenmore uprights. The beltless system works great on carpets and offers a "gentle" option that slows the brush down even more for delicate carpets.
