A neighbor is selling this canister for $10, and I'm considering picking it up. I could use a nice canister vacuum. The cost of the complete hose assembly is $180. Does anyone know if there is a more cost effective method to repair this besides duct tape??

Short of finding a compatible hose in better condition, duct tape is probably your most cost effective option. I'm guessing the hose has internal electrical wiring, which would make it pretty much impossible for you to cut off a few inches of bad hose and try to re-attach the connector. You really have to ask yourself how much you're willing to spend fixing up a $10 vacuum cleaner because you can buy a whole lot of duct tape for $180. Fortunately, the silver duct tape doesn't look very much out of place on that gray machine. If the hole in the hose is fairly small, you might want to try putting a bead of RTV silicone over it. I recently fixed a 3/4-inch split in a vinyl Electrolux hose this way and it's holding okay—at least for now. Somebody on this forum also suggested clear FlexTape as an alternative. It's a bit more expensive but a little less visible than silver duct tape.

I would put the part number in eBay and see if you can find it cheaper. last I heard these vacuums are selling for just about $100 on close out for our favorite Box store going out of business.

It's worth getting for $10, it's quiet and has pretty good attachments. I'd agree on trying silicone, or look for a used hose on eBay if need be...

One other idea you could try, & I am surprised nobody has mentioned this yet: Buy a used Kenmore hose that has the 3 way off/floor/carpet switch & has no tears in the hose, take the handles off both hoses & transfer the Crossover handle onto the hose you bought. The hose material is the same on all of them, it all has 3 wire connections, so as long as you carefully observe exactly how the Crossover's handle is wired up, you should have no problem. And it should be VERY EASY to find another used hose for cheap thru a local shop or Craigslist, seeing how common they are.

I would definitely invest in the $180 genuine replacement hose. Paying $200 for a vac that usually costs twice as much is a good deal! And this is an excellent Kenmore.

$180 for a hose is a rip off and way way way overpriced, powered or not. Vacuums also depreciate quickly, so it's not worth spending so much money on it when in 2-3 years it will only sell for $30 or so. I never pay over $20 for any vacuum parts.

Best thing you can do is look for a flexible tape that won't peel off as you move the hose, something like teflon tape, that will fit between the rungs of the hose and get in there to seal it. Maybe that heavy duty strapping tape for shipping, those I think come in really narrow widths.

It's worth the money to buy it as it's still a new vacuum. If it's still under warranty, you can see if you can smooth talk them into getting a free hose, but they'd likely need all the purchase info.

UPDATE - I didn't take the Kenmore crossover

Thanks for all the input. I passed on this unit. I went to my local riccar dealer and got a Sunburst suction only canister to compliment my Sanitaire S675 (VG1 brushroll and ST bags)

I'm so surprised no one told you how EASY it is to fix that hose. The hard plastic cuff will come up the hose, you can cut off the inch or so that's bad. It's so easy to repair, I've done hundreds of them over the years for customers. They break normally at the handle end, but both ends of the hose are repairable.

Wait...is the Riccar Sunburst a $180 Bissell Zing?

I like the hep bag, the hepa exhaust filter, and the really awesome bare floor nozzle with the removable, washable microfiber stip on the Sunburst, but those aren't worth $125. I think I got ripped off.....grrrrrrr.
