That's what I was thinking Fan-of-fans. I have the predecessor to the Whispertone that is supposed to have a hose with that style of handle but I run the later gas pump handle style hose cuz it's all I can find. I would hang on to that part, it is not common at all. Most are long gone now.
That control box looks an awful lot like the one in my older lunch box shaped 4.1 with an infinitely variable speed motor. In the case of that older vac, the speed control is rotary dial on the rear body of the vac. You can see it in the images. It operates a potentiometer, at least that is what the part is called in Sears Parts Direct. I would very much like to find another of those controllers, just to have one on hand. I'll bet my vac has the exact same motor as you have there.
