A Hoover vortex and an Electrolux glider!

We all know about the vortex, but the glider is hardly mentioned if atall on this forum.
Was the glider the inbetweener model from the 500 series to the contour?
What new features where introduced in the glider series?
Where they nicer to use and maintain then the 500 series?
Whats better in your opinion, the glider, contour or the 500 series?

Thanks,
Jake

Oh god the GLIDER MODEL.. ahhh! I had one of these, they weren't that far off from the Contour and I think (but don't quote me) that the Glider/Contour replaced the wonderful 600 series (an upright my Grandmother had in between her Hoover Junior models) and seen as a rival to the Hoover TP2/3 models. I found the Glider to be better than the Contour as it had a proper built in hose, didn't require separates and wasn't as heavy to plough through carpets.

You know you can still buy this model today in the form of Dirt Devil bagged uprights, usually found in larger stores of Poundstretchers and strictly old stock. Also the Contour/Glider was available under the JMB catalogue brand (U3004) and Dirt Devil D6121 - but these are Contour based - the Glider handle is different when it meets the top of the frontal bin.

I thought the gliders did not have a hose? Thats what made me think it was an inbtweener model between the 500 and contours. Forgot about the 600 series,i have a 612 but its going to another collector because it needs a new motor.
So we need someone with an offical timeline of the lux uprights.

the lux glider was based on the twin turbo range with plug in tools add no fix hose un like the contour which add built in tools

Yes, esactly what i thought, thats why i also thought it was a mid ranger machine because its basically just a lux 500 in a contour body~kinda!

Yep

Yep basically that's true. The Glider was a updated version of the 500/Twin Turbo series. Even tho the model(I think)z1045 Twin Turbo was around till around 1995/96ish which was still the late 80s shape Twin Turbo.

I do like the early Gliders. The blue and white versions. I wasn't keen on the later versions with flexi heads.

I have the white Glider myself. I use to have the blue one with viriable power but that died.

James:o)

Jacob - Haha, i really cant wait to get my vortex. And as for the g-force, i think i might try robbing the science museum.

James- Mine is turquiose, looks very nice! I would love a later twin turbo - shame they are too far away or go quite high.

what cyclon?
Really?
Mine is the white vortex, with retractible cord. Was it yellow the cyclon? I tried a yellow one i think

We are on different wave lengths, done this twice this week.

Thought you where on about the hoover cyclon/cyclone.
Not the dyson cyclon/vortex.
haha, i also saw how much it went for hehe

Bit of info...

The Gliders and Contours were launched in 1991 to replace the later style 500's (or Twin Turbo's/Turbo 2 as they were branded) and the 600 series respectively. There was really nothing new about the Glider that wasn't already available on the Twin Turbo's, it was just a more modern looking, slightly more powerful machine. There were several models in the original line-up - the basic white 600w, single speed model, a blue model with a "boost" feature and a rare TOL pink model with the boost button and cord rewind (the only Electrolux upright ever to feature this). They were lighter and than the contours and more basic, but still pretty good cleaners. My Great Grandma replaced her 506 with one that was a fab little cleaner.

Actually, the Glider was on sale as early as 1989. In terms of a line-up, the Twin-Turbo range was essentially replaced by three new Glider models and sales of the Twin-Turbo stopped around early 1990. For some reason, Electrolux then put the basic Twin-Turbo back on sale in late 1991 and as stated, it carried on selling into the mid 1990's.

The first Glider models were white for standard, blue for electronic-boost, and pink for autoflex. As was the case with the Contour when it came out around 1991, the electronic-boost controls were replaced with electronic slider. I don't know why this was, but what I do know was that the boost (which gave all of about 15 seconds of extra power) was a futile function, and the control was not near the handle at all, so by the time you have pushed the button and resumed a cleaning position, you'd probably wasted several seconds of that boosted period. Funny thing was, the both the Glider and Contour was boosted to 800watts from 600, but when the electronic boost was replaced to a slider control, the Glider stayed at 600watts max, whereas the Contour was 800watts. I do not know whether the boost function was taken off the pink autoflex cleaner as it was not available for long and I have never seen one for myself.

The biggest change to these cleaners came in 1994 when a foot pedal was added to operate the handle release. Prior to that, the cleaner front had to be held down by foot, and the handle yanked back. This actually wore out the mechanism which held the cleaner upright, hence the change. After the first three models went off sale, there seemed to be several variations of the same basic theme. More than I can mention as there seemed to be so many over the next few years. The last one I recall was caller powerglide or something like that, this was in the late 1990s and had no height adjuster to it. It was incredibly hard to move about.

Thank you very much Chris and Benny.
I think mine is a powerglider?
I have a snap of it for all to see to their hearts content
