Is this normal for my Miele?

Just got the new Miele one week ago. I was checking the bag and filter today. Does thsi look normal for the filter to be this dirty?
I thought it might be because it is new.

Notice the dirt outside the bag collar. Is that normal for the dust to escape into the bag compartment? It seems to fit tight in the holder.

One of the members on the washer site had the same problem with his Miele (I forget which model) and it was due to the type of bag that he was using (it was a Miele bag). Supposedly there was a problem with that bag and the collar allowing dust to escape. I know he contacted Miele and they sent him a different type of bag which corrected the problem. When I had my Capricorn I never had any dust leakage and when I sold the vacuum after a couple years of weekly use, the filter was as clean as the day I bought it.

William - if you have used your Miele thoroughly on high suction power and a lot of times, then that is what you could expect with the Super Air Clean filter. However, if you haven't used the Miele for that long, I suspect whoever you bought it from has had demo or run in time with it. Also it might not have been run for a long time, building up dust on the motor before it is deposited in the filter.


 


Generally I've only found some of the bags in my FJM machines to leak dust occasionally. I find this is more apparent with builder dust, wood work dust and general DIY dust - a fact that is noted already in the user manual. If the bag feels tight, it is supposed to - if it slides in easily with just a little audible click compared to the louder one it gives off when it is new, then the holder may not be as new as it looks.

For me thats a bit to black for one week, I suspect sebo fan is right you have a demo unit.

I never had any dust escaping the bags in my Miele.  I remember the post here awhile ago about the issues involving one particular style of bag but I wasn't using that style.  The black on the post-motor filter is carbon from the motor brushes.  It takes months of daily use before my filters ever look that bad.

I believe you but It did come on a sealed carton.
The motor sounds very smooth and I like the sound of it when it turns on and off.
You should know as you are in the business.
It came with a 7 year warranty so I have a little time to see how she holds up.
So much happier with the lighter weight wand set #210. They are smaller in diameter and just work so much better with the machine.

A second thought....

Perhaps the carbon brushes are still "seating" themselves and shedding more.   Give it a little more time and then install a new filter and see if the buildup has slowed down.

Normal carbon brush dust

My Miele S4 the active air clean filter has done the same. Remember, the brushes have to seat themselves, but one must also realise that this is a single stage motor that spins 1.5-2 times faster than a two stage motor, so there will be more carbon brush dust wear.

How can you tell if there's carbon dust on the Active Air Clean filter since the base of it is black anyway?? Running your finger over the base of it won't show you how much dust is collected since you can still get charcoal off the filter's base when it's still in it's box before making it into the vacuum cleaner, when bought new.

On these extreme high speed motor brushes are seated at the Motor factory, These motors spin so fast that If the brushes are even slightly not seated it will slow the motor down.


 


I maintain that is too much dust for a week old vacuum even if you have been using it every day

Miele Airclean bags instead of Hyclean

Hi Rob,

Make sure your bag does not say Hyclean. Miele had a problem with the bag seal and came out with the Airclean Bags to fix the problem. I don't know about the the darkness of your other filter. Most of that is just carbon brush dust. I don't have that kind of filter in my Miele's. You can fit a hepa filter to that if you want, but they are about $55.00 and should last at least a year. More since you have other vacuums you use.

Thanks to everyone for all the information. I was just a little shocked to see the filter that dirty in just a week. I have seen the filter on the back of our Electrolux 2100 get dirty but that is after years of use. I have never seen any dust around the collars of the Lux bags. Of course the Lux does leave a thin layer of dust on the inside of the bag compartment but I expected to see that after several years of use.
I did check the bag and it looks like it is in the machine properly. For sure I am not going to toss a $4.00 bag that is not even close to being full.
It is my understanding that I will not have any carbon dust from the motor in my Rainbow because of the design.
