Is the bag original?

Nope. Not original. Eureka did not use wipeable vinyl dust bags (with tiny air holes) until many years after this model was sold. And indeed, it would have had some graphic on it. I don't think the cord is original either - it would have been in blue to match the rest of the vac.

Very similar to the Eureka Automatic 260 I grew up with. Circa 1959 or 1960. The nameplate on the front of the hood is removeable so that a hose can be inserted for cleaning above the floor.

On the other hand, it has a foot-activated on/off button. Very late 1960's for Eureka. Very rare to see a button like that on a Eureka upright that has a top-side hose port. Maybe the bag and cord are original? The foot button would make me slide the date forward a few years. Maybe 1965 or 1966 just before the Rugulator/Dial-a-Nap height adjusters appeared. And the handle is the older style one-piece handle.

Kind of rare, I would say! :-)

If I am reading the nameplate correctly, it is a model 259, I have never ever seen one like it, but must be just before the 260.....A friend of mines mom bought a model 260 and it was the Twin Power Automatic with the square handle. It also had the chrome hood and light.

Here is my 260, with new cord, switch and two speed motor.

On the back, it says it was made in 1963, because it says Jun 1963. Idk, it looks all original to me. The seller says it's all original too. I've never seen a blue Eureka replacement bag before though. That cord also looks 1960s too.

Aha. 1963 makes sense. I never thought that those push-button foot switches started so far back in time. They are still being used to this very day on Sanitaire uprights.

Is there a picture of a ratings plate you could post? I imagine the Model Number would be higher than 260. Perhaps 263 for the 1963 year of production.

Thanks for sharing!!!! :-)

yes it is....

but it really puzzles me. because the ebay photos show a really odd Eureka bag spring, that as only used with eureka. But yet the bag was suppose to have graphics. And why it is marked 1963, I don't know. As far as I know that is from the '66 '67 season, due to the round handle, and the 260 also ha a round handle at that time.

Wow. Model 259. Very strange. I wonder if this is a base, no frills, cheaper 1963 model. Eureka often got rid of parts from 3 or 4 year old models by creating odd models that had partly old components and partly newly-designed components. It's a cheaper, no frills model because it has no bag graphics, no finger switch in the handle and no headlight.

This 259 has the following 1959 components: motor head profile, single piece handle, 1959 brand graphic on the tool port cover. The newer mid 1960's elements are: new vinyl wipeable bag, round handle instead of square, and foot-operated pushbutton switch and white cord (as opposed to the matching lagoon blue cord seen on all blue Eureka uprights and canisters).

Looking under the machine, it looks like the two rear wheels are replacements, and the brush roller is a replacement (it does not look like the original 1959-style Disturbulator).

Im curious if the bag on yours is suppose to look similar to this machine. I've had this one sitting about for a bit. Not chrome, but again, similar.

I'm beginning to think that indeed the bag without any graphics is a replacement from Eureka. Outer bags on uprights can really get damaged over the years and zippers can get stuck, etc. It was more efficient for Eureka to have a stock of plain blue replacement bags that could work with a wide variety of models from a wide range of years.

In fact, in the late 1980's I needed to replace the outer bag on my no-frills basic Eureka DialaNap upright model 1945 (my college roommate sucked up a part of a wire hangar which had lodged in the throat of the bag). It was from 1983 and sported a white vinyl bag with a nice vertical Eureka logo sticker glued onto the bag. The replacement bag I got from the parts department at Eureka's factory in Bloomington, Illinois did not have any graphic or stickers whatsoever.

So it is possible that genuine replacement outer bags usually did not include any Eureka branding or graphics. The plainer, the better.

So the machine is original, but only the bag was replaced? Well, if I do buy this, I could just try to find the original bag and put it on. But idk if I will buy it. I am very picky when it comes to originality. I have a Montgomery Ward Vacuum that I had to replace the bag on, but I have the original bag still. I'm still trying to find a way to fix the zipper.

Eureka bag

It looks as if this bag may have the faint silvery color applied to it as on genuine Eureka blue bags. Many of the genuine lower bag rings will have the 'E' on them.Seems to be in good condition and would be one of the best of the classic uprights.

I think I would make it look all original again. If I were to find an original logo bag, I would just put that on and also put on original wheels. Yeah, it's easy to restore a vacuum with all replacement parts to make it look original again.
